Per 810: Chiefs tried to trade back up into 1st round

And they are looking to move up in the 2nd.

They think Dalvin Cook is the target.

Gaines certainly has potential but he's only had 27 appearances in 48 games with only 13 starts during that time.

There was a very tangible and noticeable upgrade when Terrance Mitchell started in December and if that continues through camp, I'm not sure how Gaines makes the squad, unless of course, he ends up on IR (which unfortunately, is a real possibility).

To be fair, i believe his speed is adequate. I think he displays some good power, and he's shown to have good hands. I think he'll be competent. But i don't see anything about him that makes him special. I don't see any game breaking potential.

If it remains a mystery to you as to why these back are separated so much, shouldn't that be a sign that maybe you should re-evaluate?
If you see a lot of instances where he is caught from behind, the eyeball test and sample size are failing you. To be sure, Cook is not Tyreek Hill with world class speed who outrun every player in the league. However, he does possess excellent acceleration and speed which allowed him to lead the nation in plays of 20 yards or more, 30 yards or more, 40 yards or more, 50 yards or more, 60 yards or more and 70 yards or more as a sophomore. As a junior, he was forced to carry a heavier load and still produced more explosive plays than anyone. He was a home run hitter in college and I expect he'll sock plenty of homers in the NFL.

It's odd that you can watch tape of Cook and not see gamebreaking potential. His game film is basically a highlight reel filled with him breaking games open. Replace Cook with Devonta Freeman and FSU probably loses 2-4 more games...and Freeman is very good. Would you take Freeman in the 2nd round? Probably not. Would you take Cook? Yes, because he's better.

Did you see how guys like Keenan Allen ran right by our Dbacks?

That's more than just pass rush issues.

One half of the first game of the season, sure.

The other however many, the DBs didn't have that issue.

They just continually got gashed vs the run and they don't have any future prospects at ilb imo

No arguing that we have ILB issues.

With DJ's age and health, we need 2 LBs

Yeah, even if they draft an ILB, unless it's a surefire starter (and really, I think there's only one of those left), you still need to bring in veteran depth.

Even if you take McMillian or Beckwith, I think you need more. And if you were to draft McMillian and someone like Anzalone, you're still working with little real veteran presence so you probably STILL need to bring in a veteran and now you've cost yourself Terrance Smith, who after a year in this system and with his athleticism is probably just as capable of contributing as someone like Anzalone.

I don't think you draft two. I think you draft one and sign one. If they'd have taken Foster, I could see drafting another guy later because Foster's gifted enough that the dependable veteran is more of a luxury. But with Foster and Davis gone (and Cunningham unlikely and a little different, thus iffy), it seems like a veteran ILB is a must.

We'd have to make some room for Mychal's contract. His base salary is $4.85 M.

I think we'd have to jump the Raiders to get Cunningham.

Which makes me wonder, and in all drunken seriousness...

You still talk about the 2017 Chiefs as if they are realistically viable for SB contention. Maybe it's just a vibe I get from a post like this.

But why even have the need for "veteran depth" at ILB, as you say?
