Jamaal Charles walks through Dorsey's door.

"Listen John, I know that at my age and with my history, my contract doesn't make sense any more. My future in Kansas City, if I even have one, is as a 5-10 carry back -- maybe 15 when we get to the playoffs.

I want to re-do my contract, so I can stay a Chief and split carries with my boys Spencer and Charcandrick (and Knile -- dude and I have been bros since 2013).

How about 2 years, $4m? Some incentives thrown in if I eclipse so many yards from scrimmage or take a certain percentage of snaps.

*offers rose bouquet*

Will you have me?"

There is no evidence at all that Jamaal Charles is not still the best running back in the history of the NFL.

Jamaal-"hey John. Some little asshole that works at the gas station told me a rumor that Dave Toub is gonna take a lateral move to be Denver's ST's coach bc this franchise isn't classy or some shit. WTF is up with that?!"

You really think that Charles is the greatest RB in the history of the game?

He's never even been considered as the best RB of his era.

I look at how he accomplishes his most important job requirement, and I see this (among running backs):

Player Y/A Years Tm
Marion Motley+ 5.7 1946-1955 2TM
Jamaal Charles 5.5 2008-2016 kan
Jim Brown+ 5.2 1957-1965 cle
Mercury Morris 5.1 1969-1976 2TM
Joe Perry+ 5.0 1948-1963 2TM
Gale Sayers+ 5.0 1965-1971 chi
Barry Sanders+ 5.0 1989-1998 det
Napoleon Kaufman 4.9 1995-2000 rai
Paul Lowe 4.9 1960-1969 2TM
Adrian Peterson 4.9 2007-2016 min

I guess you could argue that Marion Motley is the best and Jamaal is second, but I'm not sure that Motley could catch the ball out of the backfield.

Sure, he is tops in YPC, but there's more to it than just the highest YPC average.

At what point has the people around the league ever considered Jamaal Charles as the greatest RB of this current era of the NFL? He has never really been in consideration because he has never led the league in rushing nor has he ever had any eye-popping playoff performances ala Lynch.

I can buy greatest RB in Chiefs history (although some might still argue Holmes), but not the greatest in the history of the NFL.

No shit. He's never led the league in carries- probably hasn't ever even cracked the top 5.

You can't grade a RB on playoff performances. Charles has been the lone bright spot on some of the worst a Chiefs teams in history. Even in limited postseason action the dude averages like 7 YPC.

Right.

But who, outside of the people within the Chiefs Kingdom, actually considers/considered Charles as the clear-cut top RB in the game at any point in his career?

I'm not really concerned with what average Joe fan thinks, but who does have that distinction? Maybe Jim Brown? Not even Barry Sanders.
