Stuck my foot in my mouth today at work, pretty embarrassing. Black dude walked up and started helping me load my truck without me asking and then told me he already took care of my morning invoices.

My reply? "Thanks man, that was mighty white of you".

I never really thought about the meaning of this phrase until it came out of my mouth and I saw the look on his face. Its just something I heard my mom and grandad say when I was younger and like a dumbass I repeated it.

I quickly apologized and tried to explain that to him...he said he understood but I know he probably thinks I'm just another racist cracker now.

It was a semi common phase way back when. From what I recall more often one white guy to another as sarcasm . Someone did the right thing or slightly less than should have been done and seemed to expect some sort of praise for it that was not warranted. “Thanks, Mighty white of you”. It is Not really a “nice” phrase with some racial undertones but, people need to lighten the hell up and not be fake offended by everything.

If he's a good person himself he will understand. Make sure to apologize again. I've done something similar and went on to become good friends with the guy....and I said something way worse.
