Those guys had a great team around them. John Kalodener gave them the tools to succeed on the highest level. The problem is, that model doesn't work anymore. When Kalodener tried that with the Black Crowes in 1999, it was an abject failure.

They could not have recorded those records without the outside writer's, period. And I've actually worked on those song splits because we had Mark Hudson when I was at MCA (and he is the weirdest dude, ever) and they weren't an even 33/33/33. And the thing is, the public doesn't want to hear new songs written solely by Aerosmith, as their last record proved. |

Say it ain't so! . "Livin' On the Edge!!" Tyler is a weirdo himself... As for Aerosmith...they did it to themselves. Hardcore fans didn't care that half of the album was written by Aerosmith and produced by JD like the old days, and pop fans didn't respond to the stuff written by outside people and produced by Marti Frederickson. They wound up with a hodgepodge of an album that was too long, but still never satisfied either camp. If they wanted to go the pop route, then they should've made a pop album. If they wanted to make a live-feeling, raw-dog guitar rock record, they should have went whole hog and recorded on 24 track tape and mastered it to tape. It's the weirdest mongrel of an Aerosmith record. It's the least cohesive record of their career, and that says a lot, when Night In the Ruts, Rock In A Hard Place, and Done With Mirrors exist. At least those weren't squashed to death in mastering. Music From Another Dimension just didn't sound good. And that's on everyone involved. Somehow, I think Sony just wanted off the hook. I doubt Aerosmith makes another album of original material, ever. That's sad, considering the run they had from 73-97.

Dang! All these musicians on here... I only say that because I started out in the working world interning at ABC Dunhill back in the 60s. Some of my best friends were John Kay, Goldy McJohn, and Stephen Kasdan. I starting playing bass because of George Biondo. Small world..... |
