Reid says Chiefs had headset issues vs Patriots

[URL="http://www.sportsnet.ca/football/nfl/reid-says-chiefs-had-headset-issues-vs-patriots/[/URL]

ASSOCIATED PRESS
JANUARY 17, 2016, 2:16 PM
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs coach Andy Reid says his team experienced problems with their headsets during Saturday’s playoff loss in New England, though they worked fine in the crucial final minutes of the game.

Reid said the problem occurred in the first half between the coaching staff and the radio in quarterback Alex Smith’s helmet.

But Reid said they cut out "just a little bit, not much," and did not think that they were anything out of the ordinary.

It’s not the first time that headsets had trouble at Gillette Stadium.

In the regular-season opener, Pittsburgh complained the coaches' headsets were filled with the Patriots' radio broadcast of the game. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin later said his coaches have had problems with headsets every time they play at New England.

The Patriots beat the Chiefs 27-20 on Saturday.

On the field goal drive before the half (I believe), the Chiefs had a third and short where they called a timeout. When they came back from the timeout, they converted on the third and short with a run, and that put them in first and goal. After the third down conversion, they ran up to the line and spiked the ball. And that put it at 2nd and goal. My question is this: How come they didn't have a play queued up for after the conversion? I mean, you were just on the sideline with the coaches. You knew you were coming out and running for the conversion (that's assuming Alex didn't audible to a run at the line). Why waste a down spiking the ball to stop the clock, when you could have easily had a second play queued up for after the 3rd down conversion? That's one less shot you get at the end zone before settling for three. That's a coaching issue.

As was demonstrated time and time again this season, headset issues are a problem league-wide. Coach after coach acknowledged this. Tomlin, the one who started the crying about the Patriots and headsets this season, got made to look like a fool when it became public that headset issues have popped up in Pittsburgh, too, and people reading something nefarious into the headset issues are pretty much just demonstrating themselves to be idiots.

Pats fans are either the most delusional fans in the NFL, or the most dishonest. They can excuse anything.

Don't be an idiot. Here are just a few examples of incidents and/or of coaches noting that these things happen with some frequency:

Quote:
"It's rare that I've gone through an NFL game that there was not a problem with the headset," Browns coach Mike Pettine said, noting there's often dead zones in certain spots on the sideline.

Pettine said the coach-to-coach communication system would soon be upgraded.

"The system that we're using, it's my understanding that it's going to be replaced. That, to me, has been in the works," Pettine said. "We've talked about it in the offseason. We're going to get through this season with what we have and there are problems with it."

While fans watched fill-in Buffalo quarterback EJ Manuel bury the team with three first-half turnovers that left the team in a 27-3 hole, the Bills found themselves wrestling with a second opponent: faulty headsets that stymied communication between Manuel and play-caller Greg Roman.

Asked if the in-game technical failures were an issue, coach Rex Ryan told reporters: "Yeah, that's an understatement."

Coach Pete Carroll told NBC at halftime that the Seattle Seahawks were having communication issues with their headsets against the Minnesota Vikings.

Todd Bowles wasn't aware the Titans had headset problems Sunday when the Jets scored a touchdown on a play in which they neglected to cover Brandon Marshall.

Bowles, the Jets' head coach, also said his team had no such communication issues during their 30-8 victory at MetLife Stadium.

According to Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin, headset issues are not uncommon.

“It happens quite a bit,” Philbin said after Friday's practice. “It happened [to the Dolphins] in Chicago in the preseason. So I think it happens. I don’t recall ever having any problem up there [in Foxborough].”

Headset problems seem to be a reoccurring issue this season, with the Baltimore Ravens vs. Arizona Cardinals game ending on a bad note as a result of said headset problems.
