Thanks. Skimming through, I still mostly see the piracy thing (which I'm not interested in) and connection to your media (of which I have very little). I was more wondering if the flexibility of the FireTV has performance benefits.

Of course that was probably covered in there somewhere. I'll look through it more later if I am so inclined.

That's where I keep landing with it. I don't mind the general idea of Kodi/XBMC, but I can't figure out what it really brings to the table beyond easy access to pirated material. Every app I really care about is already on Roku and is officially supported.

If you're intent on avoiding piracy, then you might as well stick to the simplicity of Roku. No worries.

If we're not missing anything, then I'd suggest your "grandparents operating a VCR" comment is off base. In my case, my preference has nothing to do with technical know-how and instead is more about a preference to stick with legal sources.

You're missing a lot. But all of the good stuff you're missing is the less legal stuff. So it's irrelevant. Sorry if you took offense.

I understand there's a ton you can do in Kodi. I've looked into it, installed it on my PC and I know I'm just scratching the surface. I just don't see much that it gives me that I can't get on my chromecast. I can find virtually any show or movie I want in my HD cinema app and cast it to my tv, basically within a day of the show airing. I can use SS-Plex( or many other unsupported Plex channels) to get multiple other streams on something that just came out and isn't up on HD Cinema yet. The only thing I don't really have nailed down is Live Sports, but that's it. It's just really difficult to find something that blows me away and makes me want to go that route.

Trust me, I'm looking and I want to find something that makes me want it. I just don't see anything that is really giving me something better than I have yet.

Just to be clear, I want to be convinced here. If it's better, I want to use it. I'm just not seeing it yet.

Roku 3 (the model version without voice search) is on sale at Best Buy for $79.99, and it's normally $99.99

I was gonna pick up a Roku 2 for $69.99, but I saw the sale and snatched it up.

The biggest advantage for me, is that XBMC/KODI provides a DVR-like presentation of all the media I desire. All the TV series I follow are available within hours of release, and it's all presented with artwork and descriptions. You can organize shows with profiles or any number of other methods to have your own shows/wife shows/kid shows. You can literally stream any popular TV/movie instantly. It's like Netflix for everything. You can even install plugins that allow you to watch live streams of sports/TV. If you have a local collection of movies/tv/music, it will add it to the library along with what's instantly available online. Morals aside, it's instant access to any media you desire, directly streaming from a huge list of sources instantly.

I'm going to keep messing with the installed version on my PC. I like the overall look, but I tend to like the look of Plex as well. Showbox was fantastic until they disabled the ability to use Allcast. Kodi is less likely to have those problems.
I have a feeling there's a lot of nice customizations for it so I think on a single device, once it's setup, it's probably fantastic. The main thing I like about the chromecast is just that I can cast to multiple devices from one simple to use remote (my phone or tablet). You barely have to configure a thing. What I probably really need to look into is if I can set up Kodi on my tablet and use that to cast to any of my other devices. I really don't want to have to set up separate devices. One setup and cast everything from there, that's what I want. I'll have to dig into it.
