Superman Prequel ‘Krypton’ TV Series Lands at SyFy

Thanks Gotham!

Superman Prequel ‘Krypton’ TV Series Lands at Syfy From David Goyer

We did it, everyone! First ‘Smallville’ took us back to a teenage Clark Kent’s evolution into the Man of Steel, then ‘Gotham’ explored the origins of a prepubescent Batman. Now Syfy is officially upping the ante with writer David Goyer to create a ‘Krypton’ TV series, exploring the origin’s origin’s origin of Superman’s grandpappy!

Granted, we’d heard of the potential for Goyer’s ‘Krypton’ series before, though at the time few details were known beyond the prequel’s title, and its presumable implications. Now, Syfy’s order has detailed that Goyer and ‘Once Upon A Time’’s Ian Goldberg will executive produce the project, which goes beyond Jor-El to delve even further into Superman’s history:

Years before the Superman legend we know, the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This series follows The Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known.

I’ll be frank, the potential for a ‘Krypton’ TV series probably exceeds that of something like ‘Gotham,’ in that an alien world with unfamiliar characters plays right into Syfy’s wheelhouse, and wouldn’t work so hard to beat us over the head with references to future DC heroes and villains. And while it seemed like CBS’ ‘Supergirl’ had us covered for Warner Bros. sidestepping its cinematic universe to put a Kryptonian hero on TV, Syfy would no doubt have considerable investment in bringing its own DC drama to life.

Just so long as we don’t have Brainiac as a tortured adolescent. Or Jim Gordon as a hotshot rookie in the Krypton Police Department. You scoff, but they’ll do it. They’re making a TV series about Superman’s grandpa. By god, they’ll do it.

What do you think? Could Syfy’s ‘Krypton’ exceed ‘Gotham’ in the superhero origin arms race? Can ‘Arrow’ and ‘The Flash’ come and play too, because time travel, or something?

I'm kind of interested. I'm sure Jor El and Zod will all be in it. Quite frankly, I'm more interested in what occurred on his native planet and how it became what it is rather than Clark Kent whining about being the most all powerful person on Earth.

I would rather them make a movie about Lex Luther, his trials and tribulations between good and evil, than to watch a Superman movie. Just make Clark Kent an after thought. Lex Luther would be a much more interesting character. Clark Kent is like the most boring character ever.
