PGA golfer gives up lead to witness daughter's birth
Would you have done the same?
http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/28/sport/...html?hpt=hp_t3 PGA star Hunter Mahan chose family over work this weekend, and though it may have cost him more than $1 million, he sounds ecstatic. "What a whirlwind of a day," Mahan tweeted Sunday morning, "but I'm happy to announce the birth of my daughter Zoe Olivia Mahan born at 3:26 am. Thanks for all the support! "Both Baby and Mom are doing great. Thanks to all to my sponsors who appreciate what's important in life and all my fans for being Awesome!" he added in a second tweet. Mahan was halfway to his sixth career PGA Tour tournament victory, with a two-shot lead after Friday's second round of the RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario. But after receiving a call early Saturday that his wife, Kandi, had gone into labor, he withdrew from the tournament and flew home to Dallas to be present for the birth of the couple's first child rather than continuing to pursue the $1.008 million first prize. "Kandi and I are thrilled about this addition to the Mahan family, and we look forward to returning to the RBC Canadian Open in the coming years," Mahan said Saturday, according to PGATOUR.Com. Mahan has made more than $2.3 million already in 2013, with four Top 10 finishes this year, including a tie for fourth place at the U.S. Open and a tie for ninth place at the British Open over the past two months, PGATOUR.com says. |

I was completely useless in the delivery room. I cut the cord, then sobbed like a little girl with skinned knees.

Hunter Mahan has made over $25 million in career earnings and just turned 30. That doesn't count endorsement deals or earnings from corporate and silly season events.

I'm sure this made his decision a little easier.

BTW, the eventual winner Brandt Snedeker acknowledged the babies help in him winning. ''Zoe will be getting a very nice baby gift from me,'' Snedeker said. ''I can't thank Kandi enough for going into labor early. I don't know if I'd be sitting here if she hadn't. But that is a way more important thing than a golf tournament. I missed a golf tournament when my first was born, and it was the best decision I ever made. I'm sure Hunter would say the same thing.'' |

I think the important thing to remember is there is no right way to do this and people need to decide what's best for them. I personally could be in the room but not past the blanket. My buddy har one the other day and watched the surgery. Can't do that myself. He watched them cut his wife open, pull out the ole uterus, and then the baby. He was cool with it. I would not be.

He was lucky that he was in a position to be able to make that choice to return for the birth. If you are living paycheck to paycheck to barely provide food and shelter for your family then the moral implications become pretty blurred. Good on him for being there but each situation is different for each different family.
