What to do at #1...sorry if this is germans or belongs in another thread.

Assume for a second these things for my argument.

Bowe extends before tomorrows tag deadline. Rumored that they are close.
DQ extends.
Albert is tagged.

#1 pick has a lot of flexibility.

Ideally, the Chiefs at this point should trade down. Why? Because the rumored compensation is flipping ridiculous and they need picks. There might be some heavy competition to trade up depending on the love of Geno Smith. Rumors everywhere confirm that the Raiders are very interested at #3 and possibly Jacksonville at #2. Someone: Jets, Cleveland, Jacksonville, Raiders (wont happen within the division), Arizona, Buffalo etc will hopefully make a ridiculous offer for #1. While the Chiefs won't net what STL got in the trade last year, that does set the bar for moving up for strong compensation. 2 first round picks+ should be minimum.

If the Chiefs aren't able to trade the #1 what do they do? BPA? It's all over the place with no "best player".

Left Tackle

Luke Joeckel. No longer the sure fire #1, best prospect since XYZ. A very good prospect but with the Chiefs having a top 10-15 LT entering his prime that absolutely is against moving to another position do they really need him? Luxury for sure. Not a sexy pick.
Eric Fisher. Might be the best LT in the draft...might. Same case, do the Chiefs NEED a LT?

Guard

Warmack. Only put here because some nut thinks we should draft him #1. NO, NEVER, Kill me if it happens. He may be the best G prospect since the last best G prospect last year...but he's a Guard. VERY Good guards are found everywhere in the draft.

Defensive Tackle/End

Shariff Floyd. A little on the short side, but fantastic Prospect. May or may not be the best prospect at this position.
Sheldon Richardson. Not a MO fan at all so don't think this is homerism, but I really like this guy as my favorite 3-4 DE position. I love big motor players and this guy has it...a long with a ton of talent.
Star. Might fall out of the top 10 with his heart issues at the combine. Depending on the severity, might fall off some teams draft boards entirely. He was never my #1 pick for DT/DE, so I wont be sad if the Chiefs take him off their board.

Cornerback

Dee Milliner. Top 5 talent, but, I'm not taking him #1. I have a rule (as if I'm GM), QB, LT or pass rush only at #1 unless there is some freak potential HOF player at an impact position. The Chiefs do have a need at #2 CB position so I could....COULD...see it, but hope not. Admittedly, I'm nervous about drafting players from Bama because their talent is so ridiculous at all defensive positions that they could mask issues with players. Similar to us drafting Ryan Sims because Peppers made him look better than he was.

Quarterback (my argument)

Geno Smith. The near consensus #1 QB that is quietly moving up. The Chiefs have Alex Smith (vomit) so their starting QB position is spoken for. I still think QB should be the pick if unable to workout a valuable trade here.

He's the best QB prospect of the draft, and likely top 10-12 graded by the draft.
No consensus #1 position player.
Serious questions about Alex Smith...big time health concerns. He's more injury prone than anyone outside of Gabbert as far as starting QB's go. 5 out of his 7 seasons he's been one of the worst starting QB's in the league. Right now we have no one behind him.
In a likely scenario, Albert will be tagged and LT might be the only position the team feels is worth the #1 (with Star having heart issues). With no need at LT Albert has a year to show his back is fine (Stephenson showed to be very capable at LT in his brief stint)
Value. Some teams might think they can skip overpaying to get to #1 and just try to trade with Jax at #2 because they think there is no way the Chiefs will take QB #1. The Chiefs COULD pick Geno, ala SD with Eli Manning, and work out a trade shortly after. QB's are hard currency. Jax, OAK, BUF, CLE, NYJ, AZ could get into a bidding war for his services and with time running out could offer the moon for him.
Trade next year. Say Geno has a good preseason and flashes some talent but Alex Smith shocks us all and has a fantastic year the Chiefs could flip him next year for a high #1 in a much better top of the draft.
Fan Base. Right now a large portion of the fan base is upset. People are paying the 10% fee to cancel season tickets. Chiefs fans aren't stupid and know the history of Alex Smith. The only reason for optimism is Andy Reid. If *****/RAC were still here and did this this city would be in near riot mode. There is NO fall back option if Alex Smith fails and the Chiefs might not be in a position next year to fix things.

This is my opinion at least. I think the Chiefs, if their board is similar to mine (doubtful but whatever) where there is no consensus #1 and if they struggle to get what they want for a trade then it's better to draft Geno for the reasons listed above. If they could acquire a 1st this year, a 2nd this year and a 1st next year then I'd be interested in a trade. Then, I'd trade back again and acquire even more picks.

One little note. I heard rumors, and I'm not sure where I heard (radio)/read it (article, twitter etc hell it could have been a message board rumor), but the Chiefs might be planning on transitioning to the 4-3 in the near future. Not next year but a few years. If they do want to transition then why draft a 3-4 DE at #1 unless he can play in a 4-3. If it's not true and then DE IS a need with Dorsey not in the plans, but it sounds like TJax is resigning and tbo, we can get along fine without burning the #1. The Chiefs could likely get the same quality DE prospect at 10ish as they could at #1 if they wanted to fill that position now.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Two things:

1st of all, learn how to bold and italicize your material. This is a good post, but indenting your paragraphs doesn't do much at all.

Second of all, I agree the Chiefs should trade down, but considering there's very little desire to trade into the #1 spot, they should just offer a bargain to whomever wants it. Really. Like, I don't know, two seconds.

Third of all, you probably want to go with Barkevoius Mingo or Sharrif Floyd.
