It's not a huge deal for the Chiefs. Keep negotiations open, and if an extension can be reached, then do it. Otherwise, make use of the franchise tag, provided that Justin Houston has received his extension before the time comes.
That gives the Chiefs two years of negotiation time with Alex, and he only gets slightly underpaid for one of those years. And like Charles, if he wants more money now, he should make sure the extension happens sooner rather than later.
