Wait?! Are you saying that trading for or signing a QB comes with the risk of setting a team back as well?! Well how about that. Shockingly another flaw in the true fan argument.

And missing on Alex Smith, which is an absolute possibility considering he's never done shit without Jim Harbaugh and a STELLAR defense, will do the same.

The risk is setting the franchise back 3 to 5 years like missing on the last QB did.

Especially when, you guessed it, there's a veteran option available who just quarterbacked in a conference championship a season ago.
Alex Smith is ****ing mediocre game manager who was carried to a conference. Conference Championship by his team.

And you are ****ing moron.

And that point hurts your argument that one of the risks in drafting a QB is the grace period. EVERY QB gets one. Whether you trade for one in Cassel or draft one a grace period is not isolated to rookie QBs.

Hey guys let's get Alex Smith.

There's pretty much NO CHANCE he'll move the franchise FORWARD but by God he won't set us back!

How often do #1 overall QBs get dumped after an underwhelming second year? Isn't going to happen.

If he sucked the second year, the third year there'd be idle talk about competition, maybe a veteran brought in to 'push' or 'motivate' him. But the team would slog through another year hoping to turn him into a system QB or get some pennies back for their dollar.

A #1 overall is going to get 3 years easily, and if he doesn't work out, you've got to start over drafting another one. If your next one hits, it's probably year 5 before you're ready again.

All the while, there's a pretty well proven commodity available for a second, third, possibly free.
Yeah, sure looked like that for the Seahawks, Redskins, Colts, 49ers, and the ****ing Andy Dalton led Bengals.

Alex Smith has played at a high level in the NFL for the last three years. There's no question about him making the transition from college to the NFL, a hurdle most don't clear. He has won playoff games. He took his team to within a field goal of the Super Bowl. He is as proven a QB as will ever hit the market in the NFL.

To be fair Smith did more in that game against the Saints than I ever thought he would. Still your point still remains. He needs a team to take him anywhere. Getting to a Conference Championship means you only got half way to the goal. Also, along a point you and I agree with, Smith doesn't get enough criticism for SF not getting to the SB 2 years ago.

I'd say the 49ers took a significant step forward last year.
