Lindsey Graham to Introduce Bill Ending Birthright Citizenship

It is going to happen in Congress too. Either way, the EO could end up at SC. So if Ds take House then there's that back-up. I say it would be even better, if the Conservatives interpret clause as originally intended because it would mean all those previous anchor babies were never really citizens.

Lindsey Graham to Introduce Bill Ending Birthright Citizenship ‘Magnet’ for Illegal Immigration

To enshrine Trump’s executive order into law, Graham said that he plans to draft legislation to codify the president’s changes to birthright citizenship.

Graham said, “In addition, I plan to introduce legislation along the same lines as the proposed executive order from President Trump.”

The anchor baby population has skyrocketed in recent years. One Congressional Budget Office (CBO) study found that the anchor baby population per year exceeds the number of American citizens births from American citizens.

Ahem! Remember this folks?

The Rs should do it too.
Reid said the chamber “must evolve” beyond parliamentary roadblocks. “The American people believe the Senate is broken, and I believe the American people are right,” he said, adding: “It’s time to get the Senate working again.”

The 14th Amendment was written to overturn Dred Scott v. Sandford 60 U.S. 393 (1857). Without the 14th Amendment, established legal precedent is that they aren't citizens and can never be citizens no matter if they are born here, how many generations their family has been here, or who their parents are. . .that their race alone disqualifies them from citizenship.

And your fear mongering about "birth tourism" is just that, fear mongering. Do people do it? Sure. Does it in anyway negatively affect the U.S.? No.
That's not a problem. We didn't have illegal immigration when the amendment passed. This is an new category of people and it's distinguishable from the emancipated slave population.

I think you would find bipartisan support for something like this as long as it didn't exclude families going through the proper channels.

Your first post didn't give me confidence that you understood how the Senate works. The GOP won't have the votes in the Senate, without dem help, regardless of what the dems do in the House. I'm happy to hear that you understand this.

I don't see how would it exclude people going through the proper channels. Going through the proper channels means they went through the process of becoming citizens. Then if naturalized, I don't see why their children can't be citizens if born here. Because the parents have become citizens by then. But only until they are citizens in the event they fail any requirements or tests.

No it's not novel if you look at the author of that amendment and ratification arguments for it, where it was claimed it would not expand beyond it's original purpose—which it has and not just on illegal immigrant's babies becoming automatic citizens. What's novel is how it turned into expanded due process including substantive, the incorporation doctrine and foreigners not under our jurisdiction popping out babies being automatic citizens.

You think immigrants harm American workers? What do you think will happen if we ensure people being non-citizens becomes a generational thing? Seriously, think about that.

History is rife with examples of what happens when governments declare people non-citizens because of claims of "illegality". Look at Rohinga in Burma.

That's where blanket denial of birthright citizenship can lead, especially since the U.S. already has legal precedent that without the Birthright Citizenship rule, the government can deny people citizenship based on ancestry. That's why we have the Birthright Citizenship rule, to specifically prevent people from being arbitrarily denied citizenship by making citizenship as inclusive as possible.
All or nearly all advanced countries declare people non-citizens if they're illegal. There's nothing ominous about that.

Loneiguana is the youngin' here, who constantly makes arguments that America is not like other advanced nations that have "progressive" policies, but wants us to be regressive on birthright citizenship.

Kid seems confused.

Trumpers sure are stupid people.
You might tell that to the board at our local hospital. I would imagine they would find that interesting.

And I don't know what you constitute as a Trumper, but I suspect somebody that voted against him when given a real option would be a pretty piss poor example of one

There is a comment that shows you didn't comprehend a single thing in that post.

Bravo.

They get welfare for through their children. I doubt many pay any property taxes for local schools. If they're newly here, they've paid little to nothing into the system, including infrastructure but use it.

Just wow.

I can tell what I wrote bothered you and you had to say something, but actually couldn't argue what I wrote.

Sad!

If you want to turn people away from medical care because of X or Y reason, good luck.

That's not a winning argument.
