Mock (10/18)

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs finish 13-3, win the AFC West, and secure the 1st overall seed. They host the Patriotss and manage to fend them off for a trip to the AFCCG, where they lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 16-13. HC Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach stay on.

2. The Chiefs trade QB Alex Smith to the New York Jets for a 2nd round pick.

3. The Chiefs trade DE/OLB Tanoh Kpassagnon to the Houston Texans for ILB Zach Cunningham.

4. OLB Tamba Hali and ILB Derrick Johnson retire.

5. The Chiefs extend CB Terrance Mitchell 3 years, $22m ($12m guaranteed).

6. The Chiefs sign WR Albert Wilson 2 years, $7m ($500k guaranteed), NT Bennie Logan 3 years, $27m ($15m guaranteed).

7. The Chiefs tender NT Rakeem Nunez-Roches.

8. The Chiefs re-sign RB Akeem Hunt, FB Anthony Sherman, ILB Kevin Pierre-Louis to minimal deals.

9. The Chiefs cut TE Ross Travis.

10. The Chiefs let walk QB Tyler Bray, RB CJ Spiller, WR De'Anthony Thomas, OL Zach Fulton, OL Jordan Devey, NT Roy Miller, DE Jarvis Jenkins, ILB Ramik Wilson, ILB Terrance Smith, CB Phillip Gaines, CB Kenneth Acker, P Dustin Colquitt.

11. The Chiefs sign QB Chad Henne (Jaguars) for 1 year, $3m, TE Virgil Green (Broncos) for 1 year, $2m, DE Kyle Williams (Bills) for 2 years, $10m ($2m guaranteed).

12. The Chiefs are picking 30th, and have one compensatory pick (a 6th) for QB Nick Foles. They have three conditionals: a 6th for OT Isaiah Battle, a 7th for DE David King, and a 7th for CB Marcus Cooper.

The draft:

2 (Smith). OLB Sam Hubbard, Ohio State

The more I watch Hubbard, the more reminded of Tamba Hali I am. He's a good-not-great athlete who gets by on football IQ and technique. He's also big, strong, and an enthusiastic run defender. The Chiefs need to fortify their trenches for Dee Ford's contract year, and finally fix their defense against the powerful run games that always seem to grind them down.

2. NT Lowell Lotulelei, Utah

The Chiefs need a deeper rotation on the defensive line, as it seems that Nacho has regressed some this year. Lotulelei can stuff the run as good as anyone in this draft.

3. DE Billy Hirschfeld, Wisconsin

Nunez-Roches and Kyle Williams are your only backups at the DE position, and Hirshfield will not only help fortify that position, he could push Allen Bailey off the roster here in a year or two as he catches on.

4. OT Trey Adams, Washington

The Chiefs need more talent along the offensive line. Of course, so will the entire NFL.

6 (Battle). QB Mike White, Western Kentucky

The Chiefs need to shop for an intermediate-term answer at backup QB. Chad Henne can do the job for 2018, but beyond, the Chiefs should consider taking a player like Mike White who could keep the offense humming along for a few weeks if need be.

6. CB Greg Stroman, Virginia Tech

The only problem with my draft, I think, is a lack of depth at CB. I think DJ White and Stroman could be a decent backup pair of corners should (god forbid) anything happen to Mitchell or Peters.

6 (Foles). DE R.J. McIntosh, Miami

The Chiefs have had some success turning lesser known quantities into powerful defensive lineman. McIntosh would be their newest investment.

7 (King). P Johnny Townsend, Florida

Colquitt will hit the bricks this offseason, so Dave Toub goes shopping for a new kicker.

7 (Cooper). WR Janarion Grant, Rutgers

The Chiefs seem to be going for bigger, jump-ball receivers like Conley, Robinson, and Chesson. Grant is more of a slot guy along the lines of Albert Wilson.

roster:

QB: Mahomes, Henne, White
RB: Hunt, Ware, Hunt, West
FB: Sherman

WR: Hill, Conley, Wilson, Robinson, Chesson, Grant
TE: Kelce, Harris, Green

LT: Fisher, Adams
LG: Ehinger, Witzmann
C: Morse, Erving
RG: Duvarney-Tardif, Witzmann
RT: Schwartz, Adams

DE: Jones, Nunez-Roches, Hirschfeld
NT: Logan, Nunez-Roches, Lotulelei
DE: Bailey, Williams, McIntosh

OLB: Ford, Hubbard
ILB: Ragland, Pierre-Louis
ILB: Eligwe vs. Cunningham
OLB: Houston, Zombo

CB: Peters, Mitchell, Nelson, White, Stroman
S: Berry, Parker, Sorensen, Murray

K: Butker
P: McIntosh
LS: Winchester
