Woodworking

I don't recall seeing anything on here about the hobby. Do you do it? Have any interest? Tools? Have you made anything? Do you want to learn?

With the recent developments on the Planet, it got me thinking, what can I do to contribute and support the new effort?

I had no problem with any of the old guard and want to support the effort to make Chiefs Planet great again with the regime.

They aren't teaching vocational training in high school anymore, but maybe we can provide a venue here to learn woodworking?

There is a handyman mega thread, but this deserves it's own thread if we are going to accomplish something.

When I went to Junior high school we had woodworking class and I have always loved it. Finally, upon retirement, I have been able to set up a nice woodwork shop. I can go from station to station and perform the particular task, planing, jointer, sander, router table, radial arm, table and band saw.

I am currently on my fifth cedar chest this winter. Each one has gotten much easier as I have learned.

We have a cedar mill about ten miles away so it has been very instrumental in the effort as raw material is the main ingredient. It is dirt cheap at the mill and I have been buying 1.1 inch thick by 52 long by 4.25 wide boards and gluing them together.

What are you working on?

Building a new garage/workshop on my farm property this year though.. which will have 25' x 30' dedicated workship and have enough other storage that my workshop shouldn't be too crowded.

Looking forward to doing more woodworking there.
Very nice! Is that white oak?

Yeah. The top is some spruce layered wood I bought.

One thing I have realized is I need a better and cheaper wood source for building furniture and cabinets with.

Yeah, I am not sure what your options are in Florida.

We are fortunate here in Missouri to have mills around even though the Chinese have been buying them up and exporting the wood back to China.

Several of the guys in my golf league work at one of the more successful mills around here and the owner told me China is a real problem right now as China has a ban on cutting of their own forests.

A couple years ago I bought 40 1x8x8' white oak boards for $225, not seasoned of course. Last year I bought 200 1x4x4' cedar boards for $270, once again not seasoned. About 10% of both has been waste.

Damn, those are both great rates!

I'm going to talk to my local sawmill as well in the next couple weeks.. definitely going to ask about that.

I haven't.. although I have actually been converting my desks to use this:

https://www.geekdesk.com/adjustable-...ing-desk-frame

I just bought the frames and then used desk tops I already had.

A bit expensive though.

We put together some for our office. What we ended up doing was getting unfinished cabinets from Home Depot and making a countertop and screwing it to the wall rather than making a freestanding one.

Went together pretty cheap. It doesn’t look like a traditional desk but it was cheap and we have 60 acres worth of desk space.

Dad cut the toe kicks off his cabinets but I left them of because I’m an ogre.

I was curious about buying a couple of those cabinets and building off them from there. I might look into that a little more now

I have seen those geek desks before. I like the idea of being able to adjust the height of the desk but damn they do cost more than I thought

Personally, I'd get a pocket hole jig to start with. Make it easy on yourself rather than jointing everything you don't see anyhow.

Do you have a Habitat for Humanity Re-Store near you?

Almost always old base cabinets in those stores that you can paint and repurpose for such things, plus your money goes to a good cause and you'll spend less than half of what you'll pay for new ones at a box store.

I actually do have one of those, don’t have a lot of tools for wood working, but that is one.

Built a few coffee tables before and bought one and it made the 2nd and 3rd table much easier. The 1st table was a couple weeks of pretty much punching myself in the dick over and over

They are pretty cool. Lots of used household things. Cabinets, boards, windows, doors, appliances, furniture, lighting, etc etc. Plenty of things that can be repurposed. By me they charge about $40-45 for a base cabinet that would normally be $130 new.
