Prime: Good Omens

I thought there must be a thread on this somewhere, but I can't find one.

Anyway, based on the Neil Gaiman/Terry Pratchett novel of the same name. premieres tomorrow on Amazon Prime. Tons and tons of good actors involved.

Yeah, I had no idea Mireille Enos could look like that. Took a triple-take to realize it was her.

Holy crap, google says she was born in KC. Had no idea. And she was a Mormon. Gives her appearance on Big Love a little bit different tenor.

Enjoyed Good Omens so far, btw. In episode 5 now. It's very....British. Unsurprisingly.

Good series.

But in "Man, you can't just enjoy anything for what it is these days" news, I went online to see a couple of different things: A) Are there any biblical references to Crowley and Aziraphale (not that I can find) and B) Did Crowley and Aziraphale actually do anything to prevent the apocalypse? I don't really think they did; this was all Anathema, Pulsipher, Adam and his friends.

I looked it up mostly because there's sort of an action movie trope about heros who do a lot but are ultimately completely ineffectual. Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark is the best example (he had literally no bearing at all on the outcome of the movie). I can't see how the existence of Crowley/Aziraphale and their friendship had any bearing on the outcome here.

But to step backwards, the reason I just sighed when I looked this up was that I was immediately inundated with "Crowley and Aziraphale are the LGBTQ love story for the ages!!" and "What Good Omens does for the non-binary..." and even "Good Omens made me feel okay about living with Autism..."

FOR ****S SAKE PEOPLE!!! IT'S A STUPID TIME-WASTER! Why is someone ALWAYS looking for affirmation of themselves or their worldview in television these days?

But yes, Anathema Device is hoooooooooooot. And nothing is better than David Tenant chewing scenery. I did kinda feel like Michael Sheen spent the whole movie doing a bit of a Martin Freeman impression though.

I was trying to place her and realized it was World War Z.

Red works well on her...

Maybe I missed something, but I saw two friends.

We need a new...something, that serves as the Bechdel Test for people who are watching. Like, is it possible to see friendship as a suitable fictional relationship between men and men, and men and women, and women and women, and trans and trans, and trans and not, or does there have to be hidden context with everything? And that goes as much for the conservative 'family values' whackjobs who see gay programming in everything as it does for the lgbtq folks.

And yeah I get that representation is a big deal to a lot of people, and I get that the world has been and often continues to be a shit place for people who don't fall squarely into the "traditional" binary roles that our still incredibly conservative society tries to program into us from birth. Reality is that I fall outside of the "normal" spectrum myself. But I'm getting to the point where I'm almost as tired of non-traditional relationships being promoted as a reason why I should watch something as I am of people trying to tell other people who they can and cannot have relationships with. Both sides are getting to the "turn the channel" point of heat with me.

I hope that we can get to a point where any kind of relationship, sexual or otherwise, between whatever people, can just be seen as a normal thing, that doesn't have to be celebrated or opposed, defended or decried, justified or minimalized. Or hell, gets to a point where it doesn't even have to be acknowledged as a thing at all.

And really, just make good television. That's all I really want. I don't need everything I watch to be a social revolution.

Just started watching this a few weeks ago. I think I'm on episode 4 or 5.

So far I like it. It's pretty British, as someone already said, but I like Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Sherlock, etc. even Dr. Who, so this is basically in my wheelhouse anyway.

I like how the writing 'flirts' with blasphemy, the great dialogue, the wonky humor, etc.

Hoping the show doesn't jump the shark somehow in the next few episodes or even the next season. I need a new show to watch since Rescue Me went off the air.

Admittedly, I simply watched the series, enjoyed it, and thought little about it beyond that. That being said, I guess I don't see the harm in someone feeling better about themselves after watching a piece of art like this. That seems like a great outcome.
