‘Chiefs are a regression candidate in 2018,’ says Washington Post writer

****ing east-cost media elite. Dude is ignorant about our salary cap situation.

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/spt...#storylink=cpy

Quote:
After the Chiefs and three other teams were knocked out of the playoff field last weekend, a Washington Post writer ranked the chances for improvement next season for each franchise.

Mike Renner wrote that the Chiefs have the worst chance of those four teams (the others are the Panthers, Rams and Bills) to be better next season.

Renner began by saying the Chiefs defense lacked depth and many of the starters received “subpar grades.”

“Even former all-pro safety Eric Berry is no lock to return to his previous form,” Renner wrote. “He’ll turn 30 next year and is rehabbing a torn Achilles. Tamba Hali (34 years old) and Derrick Johnson (35) are squarely in the twilight of their careers.

“The question now becomes, how do they restock? They’ve struck out mightily outside of their top picks in the draft, and their cap situation is one of the worst in the league. As it stands, they’re currently over the projected cap in 2018. Even after some cap-shedding maneuvers, it’s impossible to think free agency is a realistic option for them. It also means that even after a career-high 87.2 grade from Alex Smith, he and his $20.6 million cap hit next season could be out the door. With the uncertainty at QB and a declining defense, the Chiefs are a regression candidate in 2018.”

If you were wondering, there is no mention of Patrick Mahomes.

While down on the Chiefs, Renner is bullish on the Rams’ chances. You can read more here.

I can try and find the article if you like...
Reid has always designed his offense around his QB's strengths and weaknesses. Good coordinators do this. His current offense is designed around Smith. Next year it will be designed around Mahomes. You will likely see a lot less QB run plays. Other than that, his offense is very layered with multiple options from deep, intermediate and short passes on most plays. That won't change.

Even if it will be Mahomes' first year starting, I don't see how the offense could be anything worse than average. With Hunt and Hill entering their prime and an Oline which really should stay at the same level at worse, this might be the best surrounding cast in KC in a long time. Mahomes won't even need to be superman, he will just have to put the ball in the hands of his playmakers Hunt, Kelce and Hill.

The defense is really an unknown at this point. I feel like Veach will do what's needed to make it better but it could stay the same. One thing is for sure, Veach needs to go hard at it and with a vision for the next few years because I want this team to win a SB with Kelce, Hunt and Hill in their prime, so in the next 3 or 4 years.

Since the realignment a few years ago, it is part of the good fortune of winning the division.

It's not fair but Mahomes will either be the "Chosen One" or this thing goes down in flames...

If we are smart we rely heavily on Hunt/Ware and protect Mahomes and our D.

That flies directly in the face of what Andy does though so I don't expect it...

Over the cap and has to cut a lot of experience and replace with cheaper and less skilled replacements
Kinda funny that the same people who were calling for Mahomes after every incomplete pass this year are now predicting regression. Shouldn't a better QB IMPROVE the team?

Schedule + 1st year starter.

Plus he has to overcome the HC/OC...

No, the point is if you believe a 13 year vet is not taking you to a Super Bowl or even beyond the wild card weekend...then you are wasting time in the development of Mahomes. I think sitting him for a year was a good move. But the longer you sit him, the more you waste the rookie contract discount before you have to pay him franchise QB money.

I'm not sure what the writer means by "regression". Going 10-6 may be a stretch next year, but continually going 1 and done in the playoffs makes you Miss Hospitality in the NFL. We know we're going to get rid of some of those bloated contracts, so I'm confident we can snag a quality FA, sign some of our present studs to long term contracts, and still compete in the AFCW. If that's regression, I'm sure some teams like the Browns and Giants would call that a win.

He's had a year to figure things out and he'll have two training camps and preseasons under his belt. Based on what we've seen from him, he's more advanced in several areas than the average rookie, with raw ability that is rare. The bad should be far outweighed by the good from day one, especially with the weapons he has to work with. This isn't your typical hyped prospect being thrown to the wolves in Cleveland as a rookie.

I see 3 games on the schedule that are likely losses, several games in which they should have the advantage and a handful of toss-ups. Provided they have a decent offseason.

It's annoying seeing people backing off and trying to temper expectations now that his day has come. Most Smith haters were absolutely convinced Mahomes was better already, so he should certainly be expected to be an upgrade after another training camp.

Everyone expects the world from this coaching staff and organization solely because past staffs have failed, so why the hell wouldn't your expectations be high for the most talented QB the organization has ever seen, surrounded by a RB with the rushing title, a great tight end and arguably the best big play receiver out there?

With the right moves, I expect a team next year that is at least comparable to this one, with more playoff potential. In every subsequent year, I expect a team with legitimate SB potential (especially if Brady and/or Roethlisberger retire). NOW is the time to have high or borderline unrealistic expectations.

There are some things about this team that only true diehard fans can understand. People who actually watch each game and thoroughly observe the players.

The truth is, we are about to clear a ton of cap space that is essentially dead weight anyways. We aren't having to cut major contributors that we can't replace.

So you've got Veach set to take some portion of his $30+M in cap space and devote it directly to key needs that can be upgraded pretty easily. You've got the draft, which we should have more picks in once the Smith trade occurs, to directly devote those resources to upgrading on defense quickly. Maybe offense in some spots.

Whoever the guy is who wrote this just doesn't see the big picture, like most talking heads. He's looking at names and numbers and assuming the Chiefs are in a black hole, when they really aren't.

The 53 should absolutely be better in '18.

Nothing to get into a twist over this information. Look at the past several decades and how many superbowl projected teams are listed? How many? The Chiefs are what they are...get your hopes up then crash them down to earth in a brilliant burning array of flames.
