*** Official Concussion Protocol Thread ***

Lets get this information available here. I'll update the OP with the current info.

Posted on ESPN and talked about live on ESPN......

Wednesday am

Kansas City Chiefs
quarterback Patrick Mahomes remains in the NFL's concussion protocol, and it's too early to say that he definitely will play in Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Mahomes cleared certain steps Monday, "some big steps," sources told Schefter, but the reigning Super Bowl MVP still must go through other steps to clear the concussion protocol in the coming days. There is hope and optimism, considering he is expected to practice Wednesday, a source told Schefter.

According to the NFL痴 concussion data, which is collected by healthcare data company IQVIA, the median time for the 29 quarterbacks who suffered a concussion between 2015-2019 to complete concussion protocol and return to play was seven days.

Seems he's passed Phase 1 and 2.

Im guessing this is what the week looks like if all goes well:

Wednesday:

Phase 3: Football Specific Exercise

This is when the team can begin to introduce football-specific activities. Mahomes would be allowed to partake in supervised strength training and exercise with the team in 30-minute intervals or fewer. Players can sometimes return to practice in a limited capacity in the phase, dependent upon what the practice day entails. He値l again have to be monitored for concussion symptoms and undergo neurocognitive testing during this phase. If he痴 able to get through it without any worsening concussion symptoms he値l advance to the next phase.

Thursday:

Phase 4: Club-Based Non-Contact Training Drills

This is where Mahomes can get back to all non-contact football work at practice. He can begin throwing, running and do other QB-specific activities. On walkthrough days, players could be listed as a full participant in practice during this phase. If he痴 able to get through this phase without any new or worsening symptoms and passes through neurocognitive testing he値l advance to the final phase of the NFL痴 return-to-participation protocols.

Friday:

Phase 5: Full Football Activity/Clearance

If Mahomes is able to get through team meetings, conditioning and non-contact practice without recurring symptoms and his neurocognitive testing returns to baseline, he値l be able to be cleared in full by the team痴 training staff. In this phase, Mahomes would be cleared for full-contact football activities in both practice and game-time. As we mentioned earlier, he値l also have to be cleared by an independent league neurologist. That would also occur in this phase.

Saturday:

Bills Mafia collectively shit their pants

Sunday:

Mahomes drops 40 on the Bills and raises the Lamar Hunt Trophy.

That痴 why Andy and nobody is using the term concussion. They can still call it something else.

It’s an AFC Championship. That’s a big deal. But, I don’t want to see Patrick have something long term like Montana did.

It was probably a Twitter or Reddit comment. It didn't sound right to me either, but I'm having trouble remembering any high-profile players who cleared protocol in a week so I was wondering if anyone knew more..

I don't think he had a concussion. His head never hit the ground.

He got choked out in a sleeper hold. His neck and head got yanked back and twisted badly.

He was seeing stars due to lack of oxygen and nerves shocked.

The Kansas City Chiefs have advanced to their third consecutive AFC championship game after a 22-17 win over the Cleveland Browns. But the big question now is if Patrick Mahomes will be cleared to play in Sunday’s AFC championship game against Buffalo.

There is no easy answer, because there is no set timeline for players to return from a concussion. It is possible for Mahomes to pass through the concussion protocol within a week; it’s equally possible that his symptoms persist longer and he’s ruled out.

According to the NFL’s concussion data, which is collected by healthcare data company IQVIA, the median time for the 29 quarterbacks who suffered a concussion between 2015-2019 to complete concussion protocol and return to play was seven days.

But each concussion is different, and every player who suffers a brain injury follows his own recovery timeline.

Here’s a look at the NFL’s protocols, where Mahomes is now, and what steps come next:

What happened to Patrick Mahomes on Sunday?

Mahomes was a clear candidate for the concussion protocol from the moment he was helped to his feet after a hit in the third quarter. He appeared dazed and needed immediate assistance. He was first escorted to the medical tent on the Chiefs sideline, where he underwent an initial evaluation by the Chiefs’ team physician and an unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant. After that short exam, Mahomes jogged to the locker room for a full concussion evaluation. The team announced a short time later he was being evaluated for a concussion, and by early in the fourth quarter, he was ruled out.

That decision officially puts Mahomes in the concussion protocol.

What happens next with Mahomes in concussion protocol?

Mahomes will have another concussion evaluation on Monday, standard protocol for any player who suffers a head injury during a game, and will begin a five-step process for being cleared to return to play.

There is not a set number of days for how long this process can take, and it would be irresponsible to speculate on that timeline based on things like how quicklyl Mahomes jogged into the locker room, or the tweets he sent after the game.

What are the next steps for Mahomes?

According to the NFL’s concussion protocols, first comes rest, an evaluation of symptoms and light exercise. If he can manage light exercise without a return of symptoms (like a headache or sensitivity to light), he will be cleared for aerobic exercise, things like running on a treadmill or riding a stationary bike. Next comes a return to weight training and some football drills. It’s common that a player who is still in this phase of the concussion protocol will be seen on the practice field working off to the side with a strength and conditioning coach. If symptoms have not returned, Mahomes would be cleared to resume non-contact football drills with his teammates.

During these first four phases, Mahomes will undergo further neurological tests, and he’ll only be allowed to return to full-contact football activities once his brain function returns to the baseline levels, based on his preseason neurological evaluation.

Only if symptoms remain at bay during all of these phases will Mahomes be cleared to return, either for full participation in practice or for a game.

Who determines if Mahomes can play next week against the Bills?

It won’t be up to Mahomes. The Chiefs medical staff will be the first to clear Mahomes, but that decision will have to be reviewed and confirmed by an independent neurologist.

Didn't Alex Smith have a really similar situation? Got up woozy, out for the rest of the game, then they said it wasn't a concussion and he played the following week?

Anybody else remember that or when it was?

Found it. Smith took a hit to the head and got up woozy. Seemed like an obvious concussion. They pulled him from the game, and then on Monday said it wasn't a concussion.
