https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/sta...downs-per-game If they can cut that down to 20-22 range (where they were last year), then maybe there'd be improvement across the board. I was trying to find out what was the yards allowed average on a first down play. I recall seeing a stat (it may had been the SNF game, but I'm not 100% certain) that on first downs, the Chiefs allowed somewhere close to 5-6 yards on first downs, but I couldn't find anything online to help support my thinking.

I'm fully on board with the fire Bob Sutton now bandwagon. (I was on the NEVER Sutton bandwagon and the many versions of it since he came to KC)
He's an awful DC. I think his players have given up to be honest. Bad tackling, missing assignments etc. Thats on coaching. His players are thinking too much instead of responding. Hitchens is a much better LB than he's shown because hes thinking too much. The scheme needs to be dumbed down for the rest of the season. Fire Sutton, promote from within to interim DC. Fire everyone at the end of the year on that side of the ball. I'd love to have someone like Jack Del Rio next year, a former KC guy that is a great defensive mind. He'd have complete control of the defense with Reid here. Hell, what's he doing now? |

Sell out to a run stop, Brady scores the TD over the top to Gordon, same result - this defense doesn't have the speed to attack or the smarts to react, because the players just aren't there. Change the coordinator, change the scheme...doesn't matter, we'll have the same result unless we get better defenders. Remember when going from Greg Robinson to Gunther was going to be the missing ingredient to get us to the Super Bowl? But we still had Eric Warfield and Kawvika Mitchell and Eric Hicks et al as STARTERS. Eric Warfield started for us for more than one season...then went to New England and couldn't even make the team. The coordinator made not one lick of difference, because the defensive talent was terrible. Eric Downing...Junior Siaavi (sp?)...William Bartee... You and I and every swinging dick reading this is still tied with William Bartee for career INTs. And he STARTED. At LEAST a full season or two. That's horrid. William Bartee.

I'll ask again - if we're firing folks, can we please start with the doofy bastard of an ILB coach?
Its Mark DeLeone's first year in the role and everyone he's responsible for has regressed. Move him back to LBs assistant and find some crusty old ball coach who will at least get these guys playing downhill. I mean shit - they are so tentative at this point that they get beat by EVERYTHING. Just decide to attack the LOS and only get beat in the air. Sutton doesnt coach any individual players on a day to day basis - that's not his job. He cannot run any kind of defense effectively playing 9 on 11. If he ends up getting canned, so be it, but can we do something to give him credible ILB play first?

There's no salary cap on coaches and the things you teach your ILBs and OLBs aren't the same. If you can have another person dedicating more of his time to a group of players, that's fine with me. I don't see a problem with a CBs coach and a safeties coach. I'm not sure I'd agree with a DE coach vs. DT coach or multiple OL coaches, but the ILB/OLB distinction is kinda similar to TE vs WR to me. They do some things that are similar, but some things that are quite a bit different. There's nothing terribly complex about 'read/react' and ideally that's exactly what we'd have our guys doing. The problem is that they suck at it. Their ability to diagnose a play is just comically bad. So if they're going to guess wrong anyway, might as well just have them sell out to stop SOMETHING.
