Mock 1/14

Since the Chiefs officially performed their annual shitting of the bed, here goes with off-season mock #1.

Trades
QB Alex Smith to Cleveland for 2018 2nd #33 and 2018 4th #103
It's obvious Alex Smith will be dealt in the off-season with the Chiefs needing cap space and Pat Mahomes looking ready. Cleveland makes the most sense given they need to establish a winning culture, they have a GM that brought Smith to KC, and they are loaded with draft picks to make the move.

Retirements
ILB Derrick Johnson
OLB Tamba Hali
For Johnson and Hali, it just looked like the gas in their tanks ran out this season. Neither can play at a respectable level anymore and should both retire. If they don't, the Chiefs have to make the move to cut them.

Cuts
FS Ron Parker
Parker has shown some decline the past two seasons, and he really didn't look very good in coverage in 2017. I think it's time to move on, whether that's in FA or the draft.
OLB Frank Zombo
Zombo is a guy you wish was better, but he just isn't. He's a team player and decent run defender, but his position requires him to rush the passer and he simply fails at that. It's time to move on.
I'd like to cut Demetrius Harris as well, but I'm not so sure that happens. Allen Bailey should also be worried.

Let Walk
DL Bennie Logan - He was ok, but he wasn't a guy that really commanded double-teams. You can get what he brought to the table for pennies on the dollar.
P Dustin Colquitt - He's still a great punter, but the Chiefs need to better allocate cap space.
FB Anthony Sherman - Like Colquitt, he's great at what he does. It just so happens that the Chiefs don't use the FB position in a meaningful way and its difficult to justify paying 2.5 per to a special teams guy.
QB Tyler Bray - He's dog shit, let him walk.
CB Phillip Gaines - Like dried dog shit, since he can't cover anything.
OL Jordan Devey - Not sure why this guy had a spot to begin with.
DB Steven Terrell - Literally did nothing to make me think he should be in the 2018 conversation.
WR De'Anthony Thomas - Makes like 3 plays a season, bye.
OL Zach Fulton - Great backup at center, and probably will be a starter for someone there. Probably will be cost-prohibitive to bring back.
CB Kenneth Acker - See also, Gaines.
ILB Ramik Wilson - Just not worth the RFA tender in my opinion. He really does nothing well. Dime-a-dozen day 3 linebacker type.

Re-Sign
DL Rakeem Nunez-Roches - RFA Original Round Tender $1.91 m
RNR showed enough that he's worth a tender as a rotational piece, and might even be able to push to start at NT.
ILB Terrance Smith - ERFA Tender $630 k
Not much more than a special teamer, but you need those guys and he's cheap for another season.
CB Keith Baxter - ERFA Tender $560 k
Pretty much camp fodder that could stick.
ILB Kevin Pierre-Louis - 3 y $3.60 m $1.00 m guaranteed, 2018 ~ $1.10 m
Showed enough to be a top reserve at ILB and a special teamer. He's fine on a Zombo-like deal.
DL Jarvis Jenkins - 2 y $2.50 m $500 k guaranteed, 2018 ~ $1.30 m
Also showed enough to be a strong rotational piece on the DL and deservers a slight bump from league min.
CB Terrance Mitchell - 1 y $790 k
You can't ditch half the secondary in one year, and Mitchell was the best of the FAs in 17. If he will sign for league min, bring him back another year and see if he improves.
WR Albert Wilson - 3 y $10.00 m $2.00 m guaranteed 2018 ~ $2.3 m
Certainly worth bringing back with his play in 2017 and he has chemistry with Mahomes. He's not worth alot, but he's worth a couple million per as a solid slot option.

Free Agents to Sign
FS Tre Boston (LAC) - 4 y $26.00 m $10 m guaranteed, 2018 ~ $5.00 m
Boston is developing into one of the best all-around free safeties in the NFL. Stealing him from a division rival would be a bonus. Solidifying the back-end of the defense needs to happen sooner than later as Parker appears to be hitting a wall and the replacements are subpar. I don't think Boston has reached that elite status, but his play seems to warrant a Barry Church-like contract.

ILB Christian Jones (CHI) - 4 y $28.00 m $10 m guaranteed, 2018 ~ $6.50 m
A backup-turned-starter that is developing into an A-level inside linebacker. The Bears have alot of money tied up already at linebacker, and they've never been committed to Jones as the starter except to have him replace injured players at a high level. Steal him away to take DJ's position next to Ragland. I have a feeling he'll command a decent amount in free agency as an up-and-comer, similar to Danny Travathan and Brandon Marshall over the past couple seasons.

DL Quinton Dial (GB) - 1 y $790 k
Dial was one of the best nose tackles in the league the year he played it in San Francisco. He's worth trying to get that value there again and is a solid rotational piece at worst.

OLB Jeremiah Attaochu (LAC) - 1 y $3.00 m max value w/ incentives
Attaochu looked like he was developing well in year 2 of his deal with 55 tackles and 6 sacks, but injuries derailed him in 2016. 2017 saw a switch to a 4-3 and him deep on the bench. I'm not sure what went on there, but at only 24 he's well worth signing to see if he can reboot his career. He may need to be signed on a 1-year prove-it deal.

QB Austin Davis (SEA) - 2 y $2.2 m, 2018 ~ $1.00 m
The Chiefs need a backup QB, and Tyler Bray shouldn't be it. Davis is fairly mobile with decent accuracy and is said to be a smart fella. Plus, he did okay in his short gig a couple years back.

Draft (7th round #s may be incorrect)
2 (33 f/ CLE) - OG Will Hernandez - UTEP
I have Hernandez rated as the #2 OG in the draft if I'm going to count Billy Price as a OC only. This guy is all-around solid and is a mauler with great girth.
2 (54) - CB Mike Hughes - Central Florida
Hughes might have the best feet/hips in this class at the CB position. Sticks like glue to receivers and is very underrated.
3 (86) - DL B.J. Hill - N.C. State
Yeah, Hill played on a talented line but it was Hill who not only made plays on his own, rather he opened up everthing for his linemates. Looks like a good 1 or 3 tech type that might be able to play 5.
4 (103 f/ CLE) - DE Tyquan Lewis - Ohio State
Lewis had a really down year and still turned in 7 sacks somehow. This guy just produces and is a consummate worker bee. I'll take another Tamba-Try-Hard type that can play against the run and pass well versus these undersized guys that get mauled by NFL tackles.
4 (124) - QB Kurt Benkert - Virginia
The Chiefs have to get a backup for the future for Mahomes and Benkert is a similar player with alot of athleticism in and out of the pocket.
6 (199) - TE Ben Johnson - Kansas
The Chiefs need to get better at TE and I really like Johnson. He's an excellent blocker and catches the ball really well when given opportunities, plus he runs well with the football in his hands.
6 (211 c/ Foles) - LB Chris Worley Jr. - Ohio State
The Chiefs have to continue to add pieces at ILB and get that depth situated. Worley is an athletic player that looks good in coverage and makes plays, plus he's a leader.
7 (233 f/ ARZ) - WR DaeSean Hamilton - Penn State
Hamilton is really underrated and I have a feeling he'll end up a steal for someone. He catches everything and he's got good speed, size, and quickness.
7 (235 f/ SEA) - FB Garrett Dickerson - Northwestern
As Northwestern's famed Super Back, Dickerson was moved all over the formation to create matchup problems. He's good in space catching the ball and is an even better blocker.
7 (243 f/ TEN) - P Corey Bojorquez - New Mexico
Bojorquez has been one of the best punters in the nation in yards, net yards, and inside the 20, plus he's left footed. Extremely underrated, but the NFL should have alot of eyes on this kid.

If our front office thinks they have in Mahomes what a lot of us think we have, that gives you even more reason to load up on pass rushers.

Playing with the lead in the 2nd half leads to a lot of games where there's not a lot of running to worry about.

Maybe there are better tapes out there, but I watched the Rose Bowl cut-ups of Carter against Oklahoma. Looked very stiff and reactive, sometimes timid.

Not going to completely judge off of that one game but that's what I saw in that particular video.

Looks like I might have to move Hamilton way back up based on Senior Bowl stuff.
Hernandez and Hill are getting alot of hype at the Senior Bowl as well.
Hughes appears likely to be a 1st based on everything coming from the talking heads.

Next iteration could end up:
2(33) OG Hernandez
2(54) DL Hill
3(86) WR Hamilton
...

We'll see how it shakes.

I'd love to either grab Toth or Cappa in the middle rounds as a swing tackle.

They'd probably unseat Fisher at some point, maybe 2019..
