Air Conditioner Service
I need the coils cleaned on my compressor outside of the house. I also just want a general inspection, coolant, etc. How much does this type of thing usually run. I am going to have a friend of a friend look at it but you know how that goes. I don't want to think I'm getting a decent deal while getting ripped off. Thanks for any input.

I assume you mean capacitor and not condenser. And yes, pound away. But it won't do any good other than releasing some frustration.

I have bought AC capacitor at Amazon. Check the sticker for model # of Bryant. The sign that a capacitor is bad is the metal housing will be swelled. If it's only five years old maybe you can read serial and part # on the capacitor. Clean the oxidation off the caps aluminum housing may reveal it.

But beware the cap be charged when removed and give ya a bad jolt. A screwdriver can discharge it see youtube for this and testing with a volt ohm meter.

The YouTube channel "Word of Advice" will give you everything you need to know about home HVAC. He's saved me a ton of money. Depending on your fixit skills, you can basically do everything except charge an a/c system.

If that was the capacitor for the outside fan that deals with getting it moving from a stop position, one workaround to keep the house habitable until you get the part is to use a garden hose stream to start the fan blade spinning.

I had that situation and called my HVAC friend and told him the outside fan was not spinning and said if it is capacitor for fan startup, the unit would work if I could get the fan spinning. I used a garden hose stream on the blades to start the fan spinning and ran the unit like that for a couple of days until friend was able to bring capacitor and replace it. The capacitor is only for getting the fan moving, power is going to the motor and if you get the blades spinning the motor will keep them spinning.

Had to set thermostat to on instead of auto to keep it running.
