Recommendations for oral surgeons in the KC metro

Four weeks ago I was involved in a work place accident that, in addition to other injuries sustained, resulted in 4 shattered teeth one one side and a cracked molar on the other. The surgeon who sewed up my face put a referral in for me at UMKC for implants. I just got off the phone with them and the earliest they could set up an appointment just for my consultation was fricken October. I cannot go that long plus however much time is required for all of the surgery (supposedly I’m going to need a bone graft as well) on this super soft and liquid diet. Not to mention I would like to get as much of this taken care of while I’m already on paid leave to reduce the number of days I have to take off once I am cleared to go back to work.

So if anyone has any recommendations for me for a reputable oral surgeon that accepts workman’s comp in the metro I would greatly appreciate it.

And then you ask for a bunch more for pain and suffering and a lifetime injury.

The issue that concerns me is that once the fracture heals and I am cleared for work the insurance company is going to want to stop the weekly pay checks. Now with the oral surgery they could easily write a note keeping me off work. So if I am only off a day or two per procedure it won't be that big of a deal. But if I am laid up for a week after the bone graft and the same after the implants, and whatever they decide to do with the cracked molar that potentially becomes an issue depending on how long they will need to wait in between the different procedures. If they are all fairly close together I can stay on WC until it is over. If not... I've not had to experience anything like this before so I could be concerned about nothing. Until I get in somewhere for a consultation and get a basic plan laid out for me I just won't know. And I'm growing frustrated because I had hoped to have at least that much done by now.

I was very blessed in that I ended up with a ear, nose, throat specialist who also has plastic surgery training. He doubts there is going to be much of a scar. Now the permancy pay out (a one time payment in KS) could still come into play with the shoulder. Being right handed I personaly would just as soon regain 100% use of my right arm. There are other ways to make money in this world.

To quote Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven, "Deserves got nothin' to do with it." Shit happens, and when you work with the kind of tools I work with doing the job I do when shit happens it has the potential to be pretty ugly. And honestly, as bad as it was it could have been even worse. So I am considering myself blessed and moving on with life as much as the healing process is allowing me to. I do appreciate the sentiment though. It is kind of you to say.

That attitude started kicking in about the time the drugs started kicking in. I cannot lie, all the way up to that point I was freaking out on the inside about how I had mangled my face for the rest of my life. And even after the drugs calmed me down and my practical side kicked in I was still too scared to look at my face for quite some time (I had time because the accident happened in Topeka and the hospital decided to send me to KC for a specialist to do the work). Thankfully it wasn't the Harvey Dent/Two Face from The Dark Knight hole in my face that I was imagining. Still a pretty gruesome gash through my lips though. But outside of the vanity issue the practical side kicked in pretty quick and I would crack the occaisonal joke with the nurses during the hours I was waiting to get sewn up. Like I told my brother later on, I don't have a time machine I can jump into and go back and change this. Might as well just accept it and move on.

First on the list was learning to shave and eat left handed. My shoulder has enough flexibility in it now that those aren’t issues any more. Next on the list is learning to carry and shoot lefty. I just got a left side holster I had ordered in yesterday. Now I have to work up the nerve to go to the range and practice so I can actually use it. I’m just worried that even shooting one handed the blow back shockwaves reaching the right shoulder will cause some painful type pain. I really hate the thought of wasting a trip to the range on a few shots or less. But I’ll probably try it some time this coming week.

Maybe after I get that down I’ll think about trying to cast left handed. Maybe. That just sounds like a hooked lip that really doesn’t need to be hooked right now waiting to happen. *shudder*
