Board Game Fans?

A friend of mine has got me into some "geeky" gaming that has become a real hit at my house. We've been playing Ticket to Ride and Forbidden Island as a family, while my buddy and I have been playing Ascension, Resident Evil, and Dominion.

Are there any other cool board/card games out there that I should check out? I mean, I've seen the spiel des jahres lists, but I'd love some first hand thoughts on cool games.

Wow, I am impressed. I did not expect to see Food Chain Magnate come up here. Love that game! Keep planning to play it again soon but my gaming buddies keep setting up different games for our Saturday evenings. Of course when you have 300+ games that is not unusual. And my buddy seems to get new games every couple of weeks so I am most often learning something new each week. One game that we have been ending the evening with a lot lately is Wingspan.

So given the above information I have to admit further surprise in that I have never heard of Pax Pamir. I will have to check that one out!

I have a feeling Pax Pamir 2E will be showing up on a lot of GOTY lists. The designer was also behind Root and John Company.

Just got done punching out all 32 sheets of cardboard to play Antiquity tomorrow, and I have a feeling that will be the most fiddly game ever.

So now that we can't really play board games with friends I have started using Tabletop Simulator on Steam. It is really just a physics engine but there has been a lot of development in adding games to play. You can purchase DLCs that I think are more scripted and would play more like a video game or there are many thousands of free options created by the community.

I played Settlers of Catan with my brother and his grown children last night. Worked pretty well. There is a small learning curve for how to move pieces, draw cards, roll dice, etc but it is not too bad. This was my first chance to actually play a game on this platform.

I have subscribed to a lot of games that I play on a regular basis with friends like Eclipse, Splendor, Ticket to Ride (there are a number of variations available). They even have larger games like Gloomhaven and a demo release of the upcoming Frosthaven.

Oh, and a lot of D&D options too if that is your preference.

Since the Rona has hit, I've been relegated to playing 2 player games with my wife (which has been great with a couple plays of The Gallerist, and Undaunted Normandy last night). I have been jonesing for playing with more players on other games like Pax Pamir 2e on something like TTS. If anyone ever wants to play a game like that, I would be all in and would teach it.

With both of my adult sons home, we've been playing a lot of games. We have some that we frequently play during dinner, games where you don't have to hold cards or something, like Rummikub, Farkle and Mexican Train Dominoes. My youngest got me a game for Christmas that fits the bill, too, called Qwirkle. It's pretty fun except he tends to kick our asses at it.

My wife doesn't like to play "complicated" games but she will play Catan. I'm not a huge Catan game because I feel it's too reliant on luck and if the dice don't go your way, you find out in a hurry you have zero chance of winning and the game becomes a grind. So we've been tweaking the rules and feel like we've come up with a decent variant that makes it more fun.

First of all is the robber. You can still use it like normal to limit an opponent's resources but you can also move it to the desert and just take a resource of your choice.

The second is the welfare variant. When a non-7 roll of the dice happens (by any player) where you don't get resources, you get a welfare marker (we use the ships from the Seafarers add on). Once your welfare markers add up to the number of victory points you have showing, you trade them in for a resource of your choice. The nice thing about that is it helps at the beginning but gradually becomes less influential as you get more points, so it keeps you from getting super behind at the beginning of the game.

We also play to 12 VP instead of 10 since it's a little easier to build. This all makes the game a lot more tolerable.

Does TTS have built-in voice chat, or do you have to use something like Discord?

My friends and I have been playing Lords of Waterdeep over steam. I like it - even playing the AI which is easy to beat? Can anyone recommend similar games I might like? I like the fantasy stuff.

My friends tried to get me into Twilight Struggle but it depresses me thinking about all the real people in those countries who suffered so much. I want to escape reality basically.

Nothing like responding years later. No, TTs does not have voice chat and we use Discord.

It was time for this thread to get bumped anyway.
