Mock (12/11)

It's all Mahomes and Jones, since I don't think we can afford to let him walk at this juncture (although we may anyway).

Everything else is bargain bin hunting, obviously.

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs lose the AFCCG to the Baltimore Ravens. GM Brett Veach and HC Andy Reid are retained.

2. After the season, the Chiefs extend/re-sign QB Patrick Mahomes 7 years, $245m; DT Chris Jones 4 years, $85m; DE Emmanuel Ogbah 1 year, $5m, CB Bashaud Breeland 2 years, $14m.

3. The Chiefs cut: RB Damien Williams, WR Sammy Watkins, OG Laurent Duvarney-Tardif, OLB Dorian O'Daniel, S Daniel Sorensen, P Dustin Colquitt

4. The Chiefs trade a 4th to the Ravens for RB Gus Edwards.

5. The Chiefs re-sign to minimal deals: QB Matt Moore, TE Blake Bell, OG/C Stefan Wisniewski, DT Mike Pennel, ILB Reggie Ragland, S Jordan Lucas

6. The Chiefs tender: WR Marcus Kemp, OG Andrew Wylie

7. The Chiefs let walk: QB Chad Henne, RB LeSean McCoy, RB Spencer Ware, FB Anthony Sherman, WR Demarcus Robinson, WR Marcus Kemp, WR Gehrig Dieter, TE David Wells, DT Xavier Williams, LB Darron Lee, CB Kendall Fuller, CB Morris Claiborne, CB Alex Brown

8. The Chiefs sign: WR Randall Cobb (Cowboys) 2 years, $12m; TE Logan Thomas (Detroit) 1 year, $2m; OLB David Mayo (Giants) 2 years, $6.5m.

9. The Chiefs are selecting 28th. They receive no compensatory picks.

The Selections:

1. CB Bryce Hall, Virginia
2 (Ford). OLB Troy Dye, Oregon
3. C Jake Hansen, Oregon
5. WR James Proche, SMU

Roster:

QB: Mahomes, Moore, Shurmur
RB: Edwards, Thompson, Williams
FB: Lovett

WR: Hill, Hardman, Cobb, Pringle, Proche, Kemp
TE: Kelce, Bell, Thomas

LT: Fisher, Erving
LG: Rankin, Wylie
C: Hansen, Reiter, Allegretti
RG: Wisniewski, Wylie
RT: Schwartz, Erving

DE: Clark, Kpassagnon
DT: Jones, Saunders
DT: Nnadi, Pennel
DE: Okafor, Ogbah

OLB: Mayo, Dye
ILB: Hitchens, Niemann
OLB: Wilson, Ragland

CB: Breeland, Hall, Ward, Fenton
S: Matthieu, Thornhill, Watts, Lucas

K: Butker
P: Fox
LS: Winchester

A 4th for Gus ****ing Edwards? What? No way. We’ve gotta do better at RB than that.

They’re never going to let Colquitt or Sherman walk for as long as they are playing effectively in my opinion.

I could deal with that contract for Jones. Cobb is washed, I’d just assume play Pringle as him, although we have to add at that position regardless.

1. I love reading these, thanks for doing them.

2. Gus Edwards is fine, but I don't think we can afford to give away a draft pick plus pay the guy as he's a ERFA.

3. Now I'm just asking this. I was listening to Chicago Sports talk radio this weekend, and they mentioned that the team probably can't/won't keep Leonard Floyd, who after this year has one year with a base salary of 13M. Is there any way to swap them Sammy for this guy? Wouldn't the money wash or am I stupid.

I'll hang up and wait for the answer...

Re: Hoover

I’m not positive that Floyd could fit here at all. He’s listed at 240 lbs, no way could he hold up at DE in our scheme. I’m not certain he’s even holding up in their scheme in Chicago.

10-4

I guess I'm just intrigued by spinning Sammy for something that could help us else where. I've always thought Cobb would be a great WR in Reid's offense.

I don't think teams are going to trade for Sammy unless they can re-do his contract.

And he's got more guaranteed here than he can get in any re-done deal.

I don't think he's tradeable anymore.

I would really like to keep Ogbah here. Draft a DE if one falls in the draft to you, that's a spot you never feel bad for having depth at.

One spot I actually would like to look around and trading for would be a CB. No clue if there will be one available.

Define "effectively" w/r/t to Dustin Colquitt.

The problem right now with Colquitt as that most of his punts that are 'downed inside the 20' are just fair caught at the 16 and present little more upside than a touchback would've. He looks to be stat padding in that regard to me - he just isn't willing to risk a bounce.

He's mis-hitting balls even more often than he did the last year or two, when I thought he was already too prone to the shanks.

And what's really frustrating is that when the Chiefs do get stopped early and need to flip field position, he just doesn't have the leg anymore. He can't hang out out there for 55 yards without putting it on a line and giving up a long return. It seems like the best you can ask from him is a 45 yard net even if he's buried inside his own 20.

Colquitt's no sort of weapon at this point and I'd say he's become average on his best days.

Unfortunately we lost Fox again; Lions signed him to the PS recently. So you're probably right, we'll have Colquitt again next season. I just don't see him as any kind of asset anymore.

I can't think of how to build the team when you pay big money to the two big guys.

I think you have to empty out the cabinet of any marginal players, and just depend on your coaches on the defense. They've done amazing with the talent we have this year, especially on the back end.

I'd love to add more playmakers and more OL but I just run out of capspace and resources.

Let's see what you can do.

Wow, you don't have us losing to the Pats like you have been obsessing over since training camp. Now it is the Ravens who we beat handily already once this year.

Well I damn sure don't give a 4th for Edwards. And why are you looking to layer Ward if you've retained Breeland at $7 million/season? Ward's been our best CB without much question this year.

I'm damn sure not giving Cobb any money and see no reason at all to pursue an additional OLB with my 2nd rounder if you've re-signed Ragland when Wilson's been more than credible in his role. Off-ball 'backers that aren't MLBs aren't getting drafted that high anyway.

I agree that re-signing Jones makes life hard across the board, but that's exactly why I wouldn't then also use my first 2 picks on guys that I end up using as backups (especially when I think you reached on Hall exclusively because you were overly focused on a CB) and my 4th on a fungible RB.

So I disagree on a couple of things.

First, I need a productive RB who can take the yards he's given. Other than MAYBE Thompson, we don't have that and I don't have the draft capital to spend to get a RB. Gus Johnson ran very well last year for the Ravens but got boxed out with Ingram. He's also cheap.

I don't know what you mean with "layering" Ward but we have him under contract another year while Breeland is set to walk. Breeland, I think, can be a cheap 2 year contract, which makes him cheap in 2020 and less so in 2021. We can sign Ward if need be in 2021 which would make him cheap in 2021 and less so in 2022 (and possibly beyond). We've also got a 1st round CB to rotate into the mix since we'll be running three of them a ton. I also like Rashad Fenton so all in all I think retaining Breeland and burning a 1st on CB keeps that position Top 12 in the NFL, with Top 6 potential if the 1st rounder pans out.

Ragland I've got on a one-year deal, because I like insurance on the 2nd rounder. I don't use the draft to plug immediate holes when I can avoid it. And I think off ball LBs are more valuable now than they've ever been. We drafted DOD in the 3rd (for all the good it did us....).

I know people would hate on Cobb but he has been functional in Dallas. And he's cheap.

I don't like Troy Dye at all.

I'd rather draft a RB in the 4th than give that pick up for Edwards.

Cobb is washed up, I'd rather bring in a guy like Rashard Higgins that is having a feud with his coach this year or something but is young and has been productive.

I'm leaning to the same camp as DJ... don't re-sign Breeland and take a round 1 CB. Plus, you're going to need at least 1 more body there.

I disagree on Sammy having value, but it'll be a day 3 pick. 4th or 5th I'm thinking. That said, the Chiefs may end up having to cut him to do something in FA if they don't get a quick taker.
