2018 Various Mock Drafts: Chiefs Selections

–1. Cleveland Browns — Sam Darnold, QB, USC
The Browns’ search for a long-term answer at quarterback continues. Darnold’s turnovers stand out, but so do his intangibles, passing instincts and ability to move the pocket and create plays.

–2. Buffalo Bills (PROJECTED TRADE WITH NYG) — Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming
The most likely scenario is for the Bills to trade into the top-five picks for a quarterback, and the Giants might be open for business. Hopefully for Buffalo fans, Allen is the long-term answer at quarterback.

–3. New York Jets (from Indianapolis) — Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA
What we know: The Jets traded a king’s ransom for this pick to draft a quarterback. What we don’t know: Which quarterbacks will be left for them? Josh Rosen can handle the New York vibe and is ready to play now.

–4. Cleveland Browns (from Houston) — Bradley Chubb, DE, N.C. State
If the Browns hold onto this pick — which is a big “if” — Chubb (paired with last year’s No. 1 overall pick Myles Garrett) would give Cleveland one of the best pass rush tandems in the NFL.

–5. Denver Broncos — Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma
The Broncos signed Case Keenum to be the short-term starter, but Mayfield could be the long-term answer. The former Sooner sitting behind a veteran would help his development and maturity.

54. Kansas City Chiefs — Anthony Averett, CB, Alabama

Brugler says: “A physical, press player, Averett is the type of cornerback the Chiefs want for their defense.”

The pick: Averett is a 5’11, 183 lb. cornerback who has played at the highest level of college football with Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide as a starter the last two years. He has 16 passes defended, 1 interception, 3 sacks and 98 total tackles for Bama over the last two years.

The fit: Averett might not be the sort of high-ceiling corner that some of his teammates might be on the Bama defense, but his experience and skill set should make him a candidate to start instantly at the next level, especially given that defenses employ nickel packages more often than not these days.



78. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (via REDSKINS): Rasheem Green, DL, USC

The pick: Rasheem Green is universally acknowledged as a project, but just how much is in the eye of the beholder. Some analysts worry about whether or not Green will ever live up to his potential at the pro level, while others see more of a sure thing given enough time.

That said, no one should expect much in the way of instant results from the defensive lineman from the University of Southern California. Green decided to declare himself eligible for the NFL Draft after a junior year during which he put up 10 sacks, 4 passes defended and a forced fumble, He showed up off the potential to disrupt straight off the line but another year of experience as well as further weight room training would do him a world of good.

The fit: Defensive line is yet another position that the Chiefs could most certainly use another young body with a considerable ceiling to go with the thin rotation of talent they already have in place. Chris Jones is the anchor, surrounded by Allen Bailey, Jarvis Jenkins, Rakeem Nunez-Roches and the newly signed Xavier Williams. Bailey, Jenkins and Nunez-Roches could all be gone in 2018, which means the only commitments (and guarantees) moving forward are Jones and Williams. That’s a disconcerting reality.

Grabbing Green would offer some depth for 2018 while positioning the Chiefs to have a potentially devastating tandem at defensive end in their base defense, since Jones is already such a disruptive force up front. If Green can grow and live up to his billing, the line could become a truly fearsome one—something the Chiefs haven’t really had in a very long time.



86. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: Shaquem Griffin, LB, UCF

The pick: There are instant, obvious questions that arise—well, mainly just one—when you first start to discuss Shaquem Griffin, but the Central Florida has done nothing but answer questions concerning having one hand his entire football career. Concerns still linger about his ability to answer them at the highest level, but he’s never been proven wrong yet—and does anyone really want to bet against Griffin at this point?

Griffin has been a highly productive defender wherever he’s gone and no matter what’s been asked of him. Over the last two seasons, he’s had 18.5 sacks, 10 passes defended, 2 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles, 33.5 tackles for loss, and 166 total tackles. Those numbers show off just how well-rounded Griffin is and how hard he works to stand out.

The fit: Griffin projects as a linebacker/safety hybrid, which is ideal for the Chiefs in an NFL shifting to more and more versatile players all over the field on defense. Griffin worked out for scouts doing both defensive back drills and linebacker drills, which shows just how coachable this kid is—that he’s willing to do whatever is asked.

Griffin would be an instant star on special teams and could provide playmaking depth at a few positions until the Chiefs figure out the best way to employ him. Could he really be an answer at free safety? The experience is not there among other questions he’ll have to answer, so it’s too early to project fit, but any team would love to have Griffin around and the Chiefs would not doubt figure out the best methods to employ him for the best results. Not to mention the number of jerseys that would sell overnight knowing Griffin’s story.

1. Cleveland Browns

Sam Darnold, QB, USC

Hue Jackson might appear to be better off drafting guys that can win for him now, but he is not pulling the strings, and Dorsey is not at all in the same position. This pick has most likely been between Darnold, Allen, and Rosen, with Darnold being the leader from day 1. We continue to project Darnold here, as we have for months. With the QB position, more than other positions, the GM’s and other decision makers view prospects very differently than scouts or draft personalities on TV. The decision makers simply look at what a player CAN do and what the perceive to be his ceiling. Scouts and draft analysts break down flaws and inconsistencies.



2. New York Giants

Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA

This pick will more than likely not be being made by the Giants come draft day, but as of today, they would have to consider picking a QB that they can sit and develop while Eli finishes out his career. With a new GM and coach, they will want to get their own QB in the door sooner rather than later. That is one possibility, and the best to go with at this time in the draft, as it is very possible that another teams drafts at this spot come draft day.

Rosen is already getting the white-glove treatment from media members that adore him, in his first major feature story being labeled as “too smart for his own good”. Yes, the old, “his only fault is that he cares too much” line. In the last few years, his political statements and discussions about college football have angered a lot of people, and have been at times vulgar and hateful.

He is adored by a large amount of writers that have given the same treatment to Kaepernick, and whether you agree with him or not, teams hate that stuff. Now that the UCLA coaches have been fired, there are also a lot of people talking and the word is out that he is not the best leader, treats some people very poorly, and football might not be important enough to him for him to be given the keys to an NFL franchise. At that age, it is certainly possible, even probable, to grow out of such things, but this is a top pick in the NFL that is at stake.



3. New York Jets (from Indianapolis)

Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming

The Jets are bringing in a new offense, and got rid of an offensive coordinator that performed miracles last year with very limited talent. With a new offense will come a new quarterback, and there hope will be to finally land the franchise QB that they have wanted for so long.

They must have had similar grades on their 2nd and 3rd rated QB’s, or perhaps had similar grades on all of the top 3 QB’s in this draft to make this move. Josh Allen has excellent ball velocity, and had a nice Senior Bowl and Combine. With a chance to sit and work on fundamentals for a year, he could develop into the Jets franchise QB that they have been in need of for so long.



4. Cleveland Browns (from Houston)

Bradley Chubb, DE, NC State

After drafting their franchise QB at 1, the Browns will be able to sit back and see how the draft falls to them. Fans will undoubtedly be wanting Saquon Barkly with this pick, but value would suggest grabbing the only true elite end rusher in this draft, and the most sure fire pick in Bradly Chubb. Paired with last year’s first overall pick, the Browns could have the best edge rushers in the league.



5. Denver Broncos

Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State

Another pick that is definitely in flux, the Broncos would have some interesting prospects to consider here. The top corner in the draft, Denzel Ward, would definitely be in play, but the Broncos love to run to set up the pass. With Barkley still on the board, they would have to consider adding a talented and versatile running back.

54. Kansas City Chiefs

Billy Price, OG/C, Ohio State

The Chiefs have added a talented corner in the Alex Smith trade, which should help against their propensity in giving up big plays. They need to add more talent in the interior of their offensive line, allowing them to pound the rock and close out games while controlling the clock.



78. Kansas City Chiefs (from Washington)

Terrell Edmunds, S, Virginia Tech

The Chiefs have an elite safety, but still have big issues giving up huge plays. They could use a true three player rotation at safety that can play all over the defense.



86. Kansas City Chiefs

Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, OLB, Oklahoma

The Chiefs have a lot of work to do with their defense. They gave up a lot of big plays and were soft in the middle. They have made a lot of moves on their roster, and could use more youth at linebacker.



122. Kansas City Chiefs

Deon Cain, WR, Clemson

Has good ability to generate YAC, and a fit for many of the West Coast Offenses in the NFL that work to isolate a receiver, allowing him to catch the ball in stride and make a big play. Cain had an excellent championship game performance in 2016 which is the best of his tape, even though he was the top receiver on his team in 2017. Great height weight speed ratio but hasn’t shown enough to be an early round pick.



124. Kansas City Chiefs (from LA Rams)

Zachary Crabtree, OT, Oklahoma State

A very experienced offensive line prospect with the length and agility to play on the blindside. A very good run blocker, but could use to add some lower body strength to anchor better in pass protection, and to move defenders quickly from the snap. His position at the next level could switch to right tackle, or even inside depending on scheme.

54. Carlton Davis, CB, Auburn

Unfortunately, after trading it to get in position to land Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs do not have a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. However, in a relatively deep class, they can certainly still find a talented player at a major position of need with their second-round pick. In this mock draft, they do just that when Auburn cornerback Carlton Davis falls into their lap.

At 6-1, 203 pounds, Davis has ideal overall size and length at the cornerback position. He uses his long arms extremely well in coverage, consistently blanketing opposing receivers and knocking passes down from all angles.

He shows great press coverage skills, consistently jamming receivers at the line of scrimmage. Davis also has quick feet and sharp instincts that allows him to keep up in man coverage.

The Chiefs traded away star cornerback Marcus Peters this offseason. Their primary cornerback trio of Kendall Fuller, David Amerson and Steven Nelson is solid, but they could certainly use a big and talented cornerback like Davis to add to the mix.

Drafting Davis and placing him in the Chiefs’ cornerback mix would be a strong move for both the short and long-term. This would not fix all of their defensive issues, but it would certainly be a step in the right direction.




78. Da’Shawn Hand, DL, Alabama

Unless the Kansas City Chiefs end up bringing back Bennie Logan, I would expect them to add some defensive line depth in the 2018 NFL Draft. They currently hold two third-round selections, and in this mock draft, they find a perfect defensive line depth addition with their first third-round pick.

Da’Shawn Hand is a former blue-chip recruit who was expected to be an absolute star at the University of Alabama. While Hand never became the elite edge rusher that he was once projected to be, he grew into an extremely productive and reliable player up front.

At 6-4, 297 pounds, Hand is a big and strong defensive lineman who possesses elite length. Hand uses his length extremely, consistently showing the ability to keep opposing blockers away from his body. He is a read and react player who shows impressive run defending skills both as a one-gap and two-gap asset.

Hand is also a good athlete whose quickness on the inside can be a fantastic weapon at the next level. Simply put, Hand is a rock-solid defensive lineman who could be an immediate contributor for the Chiefs as a five-technique defensive end. At worst, he is a solid player who provides strong depth, but Hand also has the upside to be a long-term reliable starter for the Kansas City Chiefs.




86. Alex Cappa, G, Humboldt State

Most of the Chiefs’ more primary needs are on the defensive side of the ball. Cornerback, safety, defensive line and edge rusher are all probably more obvious holes than anything the Chiefs have on the offensive side of the ball. However, when it comes to offensive needs, the left guard position stands out.

If the season started today, the Chiefs would start either Bryan Witzmann or Parker Ehinger at left guard. While Witzmann and Ehinger can be acceptable options, they certainly are not long-term solutions for a team that should be extremely competitive in the next few years. In the 2018 NFL Draft, the Chiefs need to find a player who at least provides some potential upside at the left guard position.

Alex Cappa is an interesting offensive tackle prospect who shows quick feet and fantastic overall movement ability. He is a talented pass protector who moves extremely for an offensive lineman.

Cappa is not the biggest offensive lineman, but he shows functional strength at the point of attack. He can explode off the line of scrimmage and drive defenders forward as a run blocker.

I like Cappa as a potential offensive tackle, but his combination of skills may be better suited to play inside. He could be a great swing tackle who may be able to fill in as a part-time starter. However, Cappa has a lot of upside as an interior offensive lineman.

I like him for the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round as a developmental offensive line prospect who could fix their biggest need on the offensive side of the ball.




122. Duke Ejiofor, EDGE, Wake Forest

The Kansas City Chiefs have really struggled to find a consistent pass rush option to play opposite of Justin Houston in recent years. Tamba Hali is a shell of his former self and Dee Ford has never lived up to his first-round pedigree. Tanoh Kpassagnon and Dadi Nicolas both have a lot of upside, but both players are extremely raw and impossible to count on right now.

Simply put, the Chiefs need to find a way to add impact edge rushers to the mix. In this mock draft, it starts with the selection of Duke Ejiofor with their first of two fourth-round picks.

Ejiofor is not a freak athlete on the edge. His bend and initial burst off of the snap leaves plenty to be desired. That being said, Ejiofor is an extremely disciplined player who shows a nice combination of quickness and power on the outside. He is also a crafty rusher who uses his long arms extremely well.

Ejiofor does not have a ton of upside as an outside pass rusher, but he is a rock-solid player who could come in and make an immediate impact. He can create pressure on the quarterback while also being a strong asset against the run game. On top of that, his ability to kick inside and rush the passer from the interior on obvious passing downs is extremely exciting.

Selecting Duke Ejiofor does not solve the Chiefs’ issues at edge rusher, but it is a great step in the right direction.




124. Kemoko Turay, EDGE, Rutgers

Just two picks after adding Ejiofor to the mix, the Kansas City Chiefs take another stab at a potential impact edge player. Kemoko Turay is not as polished as a guy like Ejiofor. Injuries held his development back in college and his overall technique on the edge needs a lot of work.

That being said, Turay is a much more explosive player who has exciting upside at the next level. Turay is a sudden athlete who can bend around the edge and create consistent pressure on the passer. He also shows elite-level quickness, crashing down and shooting through the gaps to make plays against the run.

Similar to guys like Kpassagnon and Nicolas, Turay is a project at the edge rusher position. However, his immense upside makes him worth taking a chance on in the fourth round.

In the build-up to the 2018 draft, USA TODAY will take a look at each NFL team's situation and needs.

Advice: Kansas City isn't scheduled to pick until the 54th selection rolls around after surrendering its first rounder in last year's move to get QB Patrick Mahomes.

Virginia Tech nose tackle Tim Settle would be a load in the middle of the line. Potential considerations as five-techniques opposite Jones include R.J. McIntosh from Miami (Fla.) — he's got excellent upside — or stout Alabama lineman Da'Shawn Hand.

2. Coach Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach have put a nice supporting cast around Mahomes, whose playmakers include RB Kareem Hunt, WRs Sammy Watkins and Tyreek Hill and TE Travis Kelce. The next step could be fortifying the interior line, where center and left guard loom as problem spots.

Advice: Ohio State C Billy Price could be one of this draft's steals depending on how much his combine pectoral injury knocks his stock down. Nevada's Austin Corbett, Mississippi State's Martinas Rankin and Arkansas' Frank Ragnow are all realistic options given Veach has one pick in Round 2 and two in Round 3.

3. Star S Eric Berry has missed nearly three full seasons since 2011 while successfully battling cancer and dealing with an ACL tear and last year's ruptured Achilles. Berry's an all-pro when healthy, but he'll turn 30 by season's end and has little help behind him on the depth chart.

Advice: Wake Forest's Jessie Bates seems like a plug-and-play starter and could be an option at No. 54. Virginia Tech's Terrell Edmunds could still be available on Day 3 and offers some of Berry's versatility, able to handle some coverage responsibilities of tight ends or in the slot. Penn State's Troy Apke is one of the draft's more intriguing developmental prospects after clocking a 4.34 40 at the combine and posting a 41-inch vertical leap. But he'll need to cut his teeth on special teams and get some special attention on the practice field before he's ready for significant snaps alongside Berry.

Two different mocks mentioning Billy Price. If Ragnow was there at 54 I would snap him up in a heartbeat, I think I would only take Price at 54 if all the impact defensive guys I wanted were off the board.

Lot of names that keep coming up I would be really happy if the Chiefs got, like Ogbo and Ejifor, as long as they don't reach to get them.

I love them both, but I honestly think Ragnow is slightly better and way more underrated, could definitely be there at 54. He doesn't have the "nasty" that makes people go crazy but he allowed something like 15 pressures in the last 2 years while also being a great runblocker.

I have said that if the right OL fell, I am completely fine with it. Particulary the right center prospect that can play guard too. Morse's contract and injury history has me wanting an OL prospect in round 2 or 3.

Price, Ragnow, Daniels etc.

2018 NFL Mock Draft: Browns trade down, Bills grab Josh Rosen, Bucs can't pass on Saquon Barkley

We are one week away from the NFL Draft, and there is still so much uncertainty.

Who will go first overall to the Cleveland Browns? How many quarterbacks go in the top 10? How many trades will we see?

With that as a backdrop, here is Mock Draft No. 6 from me, which might be my final one depending on any late information.

In it, I have the four top quarterbacks going off the board with the first four picks -- including the Buffalo Bills making a move up to the No. 4 spot to land UCLA's Josh Rosen with a pick acquired from the Browns.

The Browns would take Wyoming's Josh Allen, followed by the Giants taking USC's Sam Darnold, the Jets taking Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield, then Rosen to the Bills.

Four picks, four passers.

For much of the past two months, some league personnel men insisted to me that that this could be a possibility. I didn't buy it, but now I do. This is a quarterback-starved league, so it makes sense.

The Browns could make out like bandits in this scenario. They would take Allen, then get Buffalo's two first-round picks this year -- No. 12 and No. 22 -- and add at least one more pick in next year's draft, likely a second-rounder. That's a haul for a team that is rebuilding. It makes too much sense.

Then again, it's a week to the draft. Does anything make sense?

Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming. I just believe he will be the choice for John Dorsey. Draft Twitter will go nuts, but it's the right choice.

Sam Darnold, QB, USC. They need to find the successor to Eli Manning, so they take the quarterback most have ranked as the best in the draft.

Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma. They opt to take the gunslinger from Oklahoma over UCLA's Josh Rosen. Mayfield will be fun in New York.

Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA. The Bills make the move up with the Browns to land their quarterback.

Bradley Chubb, DE/LB, NC State. They don't get one of the top four quarterbacks, so they take the best player in this draft to team with Von Miller.

Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia. They need a game-changing player on defense. With Chubb gone, they take the three-down linebacker.

Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State. They have a major hole at running back, so they land the best runner in the draft – even with defensive needs.

Quenton Nelson, G, Notre Dame. He is the cleanest player in the draft and the Bears need guard help. He would step in at left guard and start right away.

Tremaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia Tech. They have issues at linebacker with the Reuben Foster situation. Edmunds could also help on the edge.

Denzel Ward, CB, Ohio State. They signed Rashaan Melvin to go with Gareon Conley, but they need more help than that. Ward is the best cover player in the draft

Vita Vea, DT, Washington. They have to get stronger inside with Ndamukong Suh leaving. Vea would be a great addition.

Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama. The Browns move down and land a playmaking secondary player who will be a lot like Malcolm Jenkins of the Eagles.

Derwin James, S, Florida State. The Redskins would be getting a real playmaker on the back end. His versatility would be a big addition to their defense.

Marcus Davenport, DE, UTSA. At some point, they have to get better on the edge. Davenport is worth taking a risk on in this spot.

Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa. They need a cover player opposite Patrick Peterson. Jackson has the height and ball skills to help.

Hayden Hurst, TE, South Carolina. They need to get a weapon inside for Joe Flacco. Hurst is the best tight end in this class.

Da'Ron Payne, DT, Alabama. The Chargers had some issues up front last season, and Payne would help fix that. He's a physical player who can really help their run defense.

Harold Landry, DE, Boston College. Pass rush is an issue with the Seahawks without Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril. So they add a young player to help.

Leighton Vander Esch, ILB, Boise State. With Anthony Hitchens gone, they get a player some have compared to Luke Kuechly. His neck isn't an issue for most teams.

Taven Bryan, DT, Florida. They need help inside on their front and Bryan has a lot of position versatility. GM Bob Quinn came from New England, where they loved position versatility up front.

James Daniels, C, Iowa. I've kept him here for much of the draft process. It just makes too much sense for the Bengals to add a center.

Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame. They take the replacement for Joe Thomas with one of the picks they got from the Bills.

Kolton Miller, OT, UCLA. They need a left tackle and he is the perfect pick. The scouts love this kid.

Frank Ragnow, G/C, Arkansas. He could play guard for a year -- a position he has played -- and then move inside to center next year when Ryan Kalil retires.

Rashaan Evans, ILB, Alabama. They lost Avery Williamson in free agency, so why not take a three-down linebacker to replace him?

Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama. They have a good 1-2 combo in Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu, but this would be a nice addition for an offense that could use another threat.

Dallas Goedert, TE, South Dakota State. They need a threat in the middle of the field since Coby Fleener hasn't worked out. Goedert is a nice pass-catching tight end.

Mike Hughes, CB, UCF. They have had corner issues for a while, and Hughes is a complete corner who could go higher if not for some off-field concerns.

D.J. Moore, WR, Maryland. They still don't have a No. 1 receiver, so why not go with Moore? Jaguars receivers coach Keenan McCardell coached Moore at Maryland his freshman year.

Isaiah Wynn, G, Georgia. They could move Mike Remmers back to right tackle if they were to take Wynn, who is coming off a shoulder injury.

Jaire Alexander, CB, Louisville. This would be typical New England: Getting one of the top corners in this draft this late in the round.

Donte Jackson, CB, LSU. He is a fast corner who could help alleviate the loss of slot player Patrick Robinson in free agency. The Eagles brought him in for a visit.
