Smart home products

Who has them? What do you have?

We got a Nest thermostat a few months ago and we just completed our first cycle on the gas bill with it for an entire month. The results are pretty awesome. It’s been a pretty cold winter this season and despite that our gas bill has been greatly reduced. Compared to the same time period last year our bill was about $80 less. We will see how consistent the savings are but the early returns are nice. It’s also convenient for ease of use with the app.

We also have three Google mini speakers. They are pretty handy. One of the best things is using them as whole home surround sound.

So has anyone else started incorporating smart home products?

The doorbells have motion sensors as well. The camera doesnt need someone to press the button to start recording.

I went with the Skybell over the Ring because Skybell offers free 7 day recording while you have to pay a monthly fee for Ring to store stuff over a much longer period. I just couldn't imagine that I would need to look back at a recording 60 days after the fact. Ring does have a more sophisticated motion sensor that you can manual adjust with zones and whenever someone walks in that zone it starts recording. Skybell is just a plain Jane sensor and often triggers with cars passing by on the street.

About the only other thing smart I think I would ever want would be a thermostat and I'm not even sure how "smart" I would go. I was looking at the Ecobee3 lite/Honeywell Lyric T5.

I have one Echo and two Dots, smart switches all downstairs throughout, two smart thermostats, and five smart cameras inside and out. I think that's it.

How do the cameras work? I presume they hook into wifi, but how are they powered? And do you get notifications if there's movement? How many false positives? And can you watch through the app, either on demand or when movement triggers a signal?

I'm new to this.

7 Arlo Pro 2 cameras outside the house (some in trees, one looking over pool)
A couple Wyze cams inside and one in the garage
Zwave garage door opener/tilt sensor
Hue and Sengled smart bulbs in floor/table lamps
Several smart plugs (coffee, toaster, Christmas tree, garage door openers for when on vacation, kegerator cooling fan)
Ring doorbell (overkill with the Arlos)
Lutron caseta dimmers for all fixtures
GE zwave fan control
GE outdoor zwave outlet to control deck string lights
Zigbee motion control sensors for laundry room and garage to turn on lights during certain hours
Humidity sensor to keep bathroom fan running
Edit: Ecobee 4 thermostat (w/ Alexa) and 3 therm sensors. Can not recommend this enough.

Fun stuff. Annoying as hell too.

The feature we like the most about our Nest thermostat is that it knows when we are home or not and adjusts the temperature to the settings we tell it to. So for example, we have our house set to 72 degrees for Saturdays. But if we leave it recognizes that from our phone locations and reduces the target temperature to whatever we want, which for us I think is 66 degrees. Then as soon as we get home it turns back on to warm the house. As detailed in my initial post it has definitely saved us money.

So no one has a smart door lock? That’s one thing I probably wouldn’t feel comfortable getting. Though I could see benefits of it if you have frequent visitors that you want to let in when you aren’t there.

I have a couple Schlage Z-Wave Connect Camelot smart locks. Pretty happy with them. We say, "Alexa, Hodor!" when we want to lock the front door. To be honest, the "smart" connect part doesn't get used that much. However, our evening routine would lock the door if we failed to do so, but we never do.

I'm not sure if its required for the doorbell to work but you have to pay $3 a month or $30 a year for their cloud storage where the recordings are stored. I didnt think that was necessary when another doorbell out there offers free storage but only keeps a weeks worth of recordings. Plus the Skybell operates at lower temps where the Ring is only rated at 5 or 10 degrees iirc.

I have the Arlo Pros. They're battery powered, and last about a month. They're wifi. I do get notifications, not too many false hits and I have the sensitivity pretty high. They can also be triggered by noises. You can watch love through the app, but have to wait to watch recordings a couple seconds.

I have 5 Yi 1080p cameras and love them. They are Wi-Fi and you have to have them running to a power source, which isn't a big deal. I have one covering the front of the house, two covering both directions of the back alley off the garage, one in the garage and one off the side of a gazebo where I can view both dog houses and the opening to the back alley.

You can set them up how you like with several options, but I have mine set to sensitive which will give me a 6 second video of any movement. It will at the same time, save a lot longer video of any movement to the cloud. They have different plans, but I choose a 5 camera plan that saves all videos to the cloud for 14 days. The total cost for that is only $129 a year. You can download any of the videos at any point in time within that 14 day timeframe. It was great being able to review video, or check in live when I was kicking back in Belize.

These cameras have sound on the video and you can watch, or listen in live at any time, or talk through them as well. In theory, they are good down to zero, but they have worked flawlessly without failure down to -25 without any issues.

You have the option of loading them up with a mini HD card as well, which I do, don't skimp on the cards.

As far as false positives, the outside ones are a bitch in a snow storm. They will record a lot during a snow event. Not a big deal, if anything were to happen, I could still go back and review the footage and pull off any relevant event.

My neighbor to the west has a bunch of cameras as well, and caught the license plate and faces of some punks breaking into his truck. He turned the video over to the cops and the punks got arrested and charged.
