Biden administration says it supports bill to make Washington, DC a state

Biden administration says it supports bill to make Washington, DC a state
The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday formally expressed its support for a House bid to make Washington, D.C., the 51st state, saying it would provide the District with “long overdue full representation in Congress.”

“Establishing the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth as the 51st state will make our Union stronger and more just,” the Office of Management and Budget said in a statement on Tuesday. “Washington, D.C. has a robust economy, a rich culture, and a diverse population of Americans from all walks of life who are entitled to full and equal participation in our democracy.”

The statement called for Congress “to provide for a swift and orderly transition to statehood for the people of Washington, D.C.”

The Democratic-led House is expected to vote this week on the “Washington, D.C. Admission Act” (H.R. 51). The bill was passed by the House last year, but was unsuccessful in the then-Republican controlled Senate.

Democrats would need the support of at least 10 Republican senators in order to advance the bill without getting rid of the 60-vote filibuster.

FOR

Residents ‘deprived’ of representation

“For far too long, the more than 700,000 people of Washington, D.C. have been deprived of full representation in the U.S. Congress. This taxation without representation and denial of selfgovernance is an affront to the democratic values on which our Nation was founded,” the statement said.

Two states, Wyoming and Vermont, have fewer residents than Washington, D.C.

The average size of a congressional district is about 710,000, according to data from the Census Bureau.

AGAINST

Wouldn’t qualify as a congressional district

D.C. wouldn't even qualify as a singular congressional district and here they are, they want the power and the authority of being an entire state in the United States — and they want that power,” Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said.

“The Founding Fathers never intended for Washington D.C. to be a state,” Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) wrote on Twitter, adding that the move “is really about packing the Senate with Democrats in order to pass a left-wing agenda.

That's good to know. I may be wrong but I think we're sitting on a virtual goldmine because it could become the crown jewel of the Caribbean with investments in infrastructure, hotels, condos, housing and so on.

There are so many people retiring in places like Costa Rica and Belize that may otherwise retire in P.R. if it was built-out, which would be a huge boon to their and our economy.

Again, I could be way wrong because I haven't studied it much, but it sure seems like it could be a great destination if it were to be granted statehood.

Yeah, the Big Island isn't nearly as commercialized as Honolulu or even parts of Maui but it's also kind of boring, IMO. We stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa a few years back and while they had some great restaurants on the property and high end services, there wasn't much to do outside of the facility.

We've been to Honolulu a few times but no more. It's basically the same as Santa Monica at this point. I liked the "dry" side of Maui and the Grand Wailea but didn't really care for the other side of the island.

If Puerto Rico was built out, I'd definitely prefer it over the other destinations I mentioned, especially Mexico. Mexico used to be really great and with excellent service but it's had a completely different vibe for the past decade and I'm no longer interested in giving them my vacation dollars.

Just give everything outside of the Capitol Grounds and Whitehouse back to Maryland and Virginia... that will never happen, because we know their true intent. They want 2 senators for a pop. of 800,000 who lean 95% to the left.

Aren't there some states on the right that fit that description? And weren't they joined for similar reasons?

There are several states that could be eliminated including Rhode Island (1 million), Vermont (624,000), Delaware (974,000) while combining South Dakota and North Dakota.

And if you want to talk about representation, California has 2 Senators representing 42 million people while the states listed above have 10 Senators representing less than 4.5 million people.

It won’t even make it through the Senate.

Yes, but the filibuster is still in existence, so this won't pass the senate.

Maybe this has been covered, but what taxes that they pay are they talking about having no representation in congress?

Ok, well, we can just split California into two states, as its population and acreage make that an obvious move. We'll draw the two states so that one will be Republican, and one Democrat. Let's have the be the only move offered, and we'll see how the Dems react to it.

First off, it was just an example, not something I'm advocating.

Secondly, there would be huge support for splitting Northern California from SoCal inside the state of California.

I wasn't sniping at you, so I'm sorry if it came off that way. I was using California as an example of how fast the Dems would change their position.

And there's no way in hell that the DC dems would allow for California being split into Rep/Dem states, with no other move used as an offset.

Again, it won't pass, waste of time. They are just making it part of the dialogue. Usual strategy. Blatant power grab.
