Biden administration says it supports bill to make Washington, DC a state

Biden administration says it supports bill to make Washington, DC a state
The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday formally expressed its support for a House bid to make Washington, D.C., the 51st state, saying it would provide the District with “long overdue full representation in Congress.”

“Establishing the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth as the 51st state will make our Union stronger and more just,” the Office of Management and Budget said in a statement on Tuesday. “Washington, D.C. has a robust economy, a rich culture, and a diverse population of Americans from all walks of life who are entitled to full and equal participation in our democracy.”

The statement called for Congress “to provide for a swift and orderly transition to statehood for the people of Washington, D.C.”

The Democratic-led House is expected to vote this week on the “Washington, D.C. Admission Act” (H.R. 51). The bill was passed by the House last year, but was unsuccessful in the then-Republican controlled Senate.

Democrats would need the support of at least 10 Republican senators in order to advance the bill without getting rid of the 60-vote filibuster.

FOR

Residents ‘deprived’ of representation

“For far too long, the more than 700,000 people of Washington, D.C. have been deprived of full representation in the U.S. Congress. This taxation without representation and denial of selfgovernance is an affront to the democratic values on which our Nation was founded,” the statement said.

Two states, Wyoming and Vermont, have fewer residents than Washington, D.C.

The average size of a congressional district is about 710,000, according to data from the Census Bureau.

AGAINST

Wouldn’t qualify as a congressional district

D.C. wouldn't even qualify as a singular congressional district and here they are, they want the power and the authority of being an entire state in the United States — and they want that power,” Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said.

“The Founding Fathers never intended for Washington D.C. to be a state,” Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) wrote on Twitter, adding that the move “is really about packing the Senate with Democrats in order to pass a left-wing agenda.

This is more complicated.

Once they’ve served their time and earned their freedom back they should be able to vote.

No. They use public services so they need to pay in, regardless who is in office. Plus it builds character, and teaches them at an early age there are 2 certainties in life

I did a couple quick google searches and all I could come up with is the average congressional district is 711,000 people and the population of Washington DC is 692,000. It does kind of cover that in the "For" paragraph above it.

So obviously the politician Nancy Mace is just being a politician in that quote.
DC's population is larger than two current states and just a little less than two others, so the argument is pretty bad.

Good point PB. They are still using federal services.

I like the border shift better. Just give it back and cut up the federal lines around the places if federal business.

Dems will gain a few reps, but in no ****ing way does that cesspool get two senators.

DC is a shithole.
Puerto Rico is a bigger shithole.
The US needs nothing from either of them that granting them statehood would supply.

So why do the Dems want to make them states other than to gain Senate seats?

There has to be a better way for these constituents to have representation. The idea of the Senate is garbage anyways. It gives outrageous oversampling to GoP by a 40+ million margin.

Remember your Civics Beau and it will make sense to you: Congress represents people, Senate represents states.

assuming the rules do not apply if they are in DC. But what about a state? Are they still exempt?
Science teacher. Not legal scholar.

My FIL has to be in Minnesota 5/30 to claim residency. If not, he becomes a resident of CA.

Canadians that are in the US too long, lose insurance if they do not go back to Canada before 5m/30d.

That is only reason, without question. I think it has been agreed that Puerto Rico would immediately become a drain on the economy even more that it is now.

What do they bring to the table other than more demand for welfare?

Yeah, but I'm not stupid enough to ask if congressfolk would have to give up residency in their home state.
Why would they?

Use common sense. Why would "rules" for DC be different than a state?
If they maintain a home (maybe not even a requirement) and intend to return there in their home state, you think they lose their home residency if they are out of state for their job--a job that required them to be a resident of that state in the first place in order to get the job to represent it?

I mean...I'm not doing your Math for ya. There is plenty of articles describing this. Count the population up for each state. If it's 2 for the same party, all population counts for that party. 1 and 1, split it in half. Math works out.

They have exports and industry, but most likely not a donor state to the tax pool like Mississippi and such.
