Exercise is bad, the dark side of our age of fitness

I've heard some of this ridiculous notion that being interested in being fit is somehow a bad thing from the loony left, but this really spells out how they (Zach?) think anyone who is interested in personal fitness is somehow a slave to capitalism.

https://www.newstatesman.com/the-age...=pocket-newtab

Quote:
Fitness was not invented in the 1970s, of course. As Martschukat notes: “The desire to enable the working body to perform better through the use of exercise and sport… is evident in the organised or welfare capitalism of the 19th and 20th centuries, company sports programmes and industrial recreation, and the relationship between sport and work under the Nazi regime.” But today, when “the paternalistic programmes of welfare capitalism” are, at best, “in remnant form”, “it is more common to nudge the ‘workers-as-entrepreneurs’ of the present to pursue voluntary self-care”.
Just how ****ed in the head do you have to be to believe this crap?

The three axe handles wide broad that was checking out in front of me buying groceries yesterday, must subscribe to this concept. She had the belt loaded with donuts, cookies, sweet rolls and various sorts of prepared crap.

They're recommending against everything that keeps humans healthy including mental health: Breathe in bacterial-laden masks while reducing oxygen intake, stay inside, don't go to school, take risky vaccines, give children who are not at risk for covid vaccines and infants too destroying their developing immune systems, don't use other effective treatments for covid and get these removed from the market via regulation, eat fake meat, get rid of CO2 which will kill plants we need to eat and now this. Probably more.

People being stronger, more independent, self-reliant and free will lead to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That is the last thing the New Neo-Marxist Globalist movement wants.

Pretty ****ed in the head in the head. Not that it matters, because the book under critique is clearly off in outer space, but the article appears to be saying that the book says that current "obsession" with fitness is a product of neo-liberalism.

Not the easiest thing in the world to decipher. The article itself, probably like the book, is a work of nearly complete abstraction.

It comes across as something Baby Lee would have written.

The simple fact is this: Human beings evolved over a long, long, period of time. For the vast majority of that time, pretty much everyone was engaged in daily physical activity as a matter of survival. The people who live the longest, healthiest lives are people that still live that way, and people that spend lots of time in motion tend to be very healthy. The "luxury" of being unfit is a relatively new development. We have not physically adapted to it, and never will.

We all have the option of being fit and healthy or not. If I had to go to a gym everyday, it would be a chore, but it wouldn't be imposed by work or society. It would be one I imposed upon myself.

Personally, for me, gyms suck. It's boring physical activity, inside, which is the worst part, with no immediate reward.

I spend a lot of time in motion, on my bike, and on my feet, and stay fit as a result, not because I feel that I am forced to, but because I want to be fit, healthy, strong, and able to do the things that I like, which, not so ironically, includes the activity itself.

At the end of the day, this is someone trying to sell a book. Not a very good one.

While true, it isn't an outlier in the far left's mode of thinking. It ties in nicely with anyone who works out is guilty of toxic masculinity.

It should shock no one that there's a totally organic move to discourage physical fitness.

Well, like I said, the thing is confusing. But it says a couple of times that "neo-liberalism" is responsible for the current "obsession" with fitness.

It also seems to say that capitalism is tied in.

It looks like a bunch of horseshit to me, with no basis in reality.

"Toxic masculinity" didn't appear anywhere in the article as far as I can tell, and if it did, it would have been even further from reality.

I spend every Saturday and Sunday on the beach bike path. I've never counted, but in terms of the really devoted fitness enthusiasts, runners in really good shape, my impression is that there are more women than men among them.

Is anyone else saying this particular shit, other than the author of the book, which no doubt everyone but me has heard of?
