Biden administration says it supports bill to make Washington, DC a state

Biden administration says it supports bill to make Washington, DC a state
The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday formally expressed its support for a House bid to make Washington, D.C., the 51st state, saying it would provide the District with “long overdue full representation in Congress.”

“Establishing the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth as the 51st state will make our Union stronger and more just,” the Office of Management and Budget said in a statement on Tuesday. “Washington, D.C. has a robust economy, a rich culture, and a diverse population of Americans from all walks of life who are entitled to full and equal participation in our democracy.”

The statement called for Congress “to provide for a swift and orderly transition to statehood for the people of Washington, D.C.”

The Democratic-led House is expected to vote this week on the “Washington, D.C. Admission Act” (H.R. 51). The bill was passed by the House last year, but was unsuccessful in the then-Republican controlled Senate.

Democrats would need the support of at least 10 Republican senators in order to advance the bill without getting rid of the 60-vote filibuster.

FOR

Residents ‘deprived’ of representation

“For far too long, the more than 700,000 people of Washington, D.C. have been deprived of full representation in the U.S. Congress. This taxation without representation and denial of selfgovernance is an affront to the democratic values on which our Nation was founded,” the statement said.

Two states, Wyoming and Vermont, have fewer residents than Washington, D.C.

The average size of a congressional district is about 710,000, according to data from the Census Bureau.

AGAINST

Wouldn’t qualify as a congressional district

D.C. wouldn't even qualify as a singular congressional district and here they are, they want the power and the authority of being an entire state in the United States — and they want that power,” Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said.

“The Founding Fathers never intended for Washington D.C. to be a state,” Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) wrote on Twitter, adding that the move “is really about packing the Senate with Democrats in order to pass a left-wing agenda.

100% guarantee that Democrats wouldn't be pushing this if it weren't drastically in their favor.

Exactly, partisen politics is a non stop agenda. It is always exclusively about winning the next election.

It really is out of control and tiring.

Shit, GOP would probably be doing the same thing if it were in their favor.

I call BS, unless you can back that up, because I have never even seen them suggest that or proposed that in Congress. Besides they're too spineless to do something that bold.

This Constitutional violation would permanently tip the scales to the Democrats.

Itís time to start filing article of impeachment on all this. There is some D violating their oath of office almost daily by supporting unconstitutional bullshit. It likely wonít remove any of the idiots at this point, but you can wear their asses out with paperwork and maybe slow down this insanity.

It's kind of funny how openly understood it is by conservatives that more democracy is bad for their party.

Can you imagine if Schumer manages to get rid of the filibuster in order to get this through? The absolute rage in PubeWorld? The whiney reactions here in DC will be legendary.

FTR they should do it. McConnell will rage (because he thinks its about getting 2 more Senate seats) but it's the right thing to do.
