Off-duty firefighter stops man armed with 100 rounds of ammunition at south Springfield Walmart

August 8, 2019 at 7:17 PM CDT - Updated August 8 at 8:25 PM
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KYTV) - The Springfield Police Department says they responded to a call of an active shooter at the Walmart: Neighborhood Market at Republic Rd., near Golden Ave., Thursday evening.

The Springfield Police Department arrived on scene within three minutes of the call. Police stated that a young white male, appearing to be in his twenties, pulled up to the Walmart, where he donned body armor and military fatigues. Police say the man had tactical weapons.

Police then say the man walked into the Walmart: Neighborhood Market where he grabbed a cart and began pushing it around the store. Police say the man was recording himself walking through the store via a cell phone.

The store manager at the Neighborhood Market pulled a fire alarm, urging people to escape the store.

Police say the man then made his way out an emergency exit where a firefighter held the man at gunpoint. At that moment Springfield Police arrived on scene and detained the man.

The Springfield Police Department could not confirm the nature of statements said by the man to those inside of the Walmart, but they do confirm that the man had loaded weapons, and over one hundred rounds of ammunition.

Police also observed many shoppers hiding outside the Walmart and at nearby businesses.

The Latest on arrest of man carrying a rifle and wearing body armor at a Springfield, Missouri, Walmart (all times local):

4:15 p.m.

Prosecutors have charged a 20-year-old man with making a terrorist threat in the second degree by causing a panic at a Walmart store in Springfield, Missouri.

Greene County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Patterson said in a news release Friday that Missouri protects the right to carry a firearm, but that right does not allow an individual to act in a reckless and criminal manner endangering other citizens.

A probable cause statement released Friday says Dmitriy Andreychenko recorded himself as he walked in the store carrying an "AR style rifle" slung across his chest and wearing a ballistic vest. He also had a handgun on his right hip.

The affidavit says he said he was recording himself in case somebody was going to tell him to leave. He said he wanted to know if Walmart honored the Second Amendment.

The guy claims he was doing this as a test of the company's attitude towards 2A. It was pretty stupid of him to do this. The article states that his wife warned him not to because of the recent shootings. Luckily the armed response he met was from a responsible guy who (one would assume) would keep calm under pressure, an off duty fireman present while the fire alarm was going off. This was about as well as this could be expected to end.

This is as good a place as any. Here's a recent one that was stopped by Grandma Power:

'Tragedy Averted': Texas Grandma Praised For Stopping Alleged Planned Mass Shooting

As the U.S. reels from a weekend of two mass shootings, federal authorities have released details of what they say could have been another tragedy — which didn't happen because the suspect's grandmother managed to stop it. On Friday, federal prosecutors in Lubbock, Texas, said that they have charged a 19-year-old man with making false statements to a federally licensed firearms dealer and that William Patrick Williams was allegedly plotting a mass shooting. "This was a tragedy averted," U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Erin Nealy Cox said in a statement. "I want to praise the defendant's grandmother, who saved lives by interrupting this plot, as well as the Lubbock police officers and federal agents who investigated his unlawful acquisition of a deadly weapon."

-snip-

According to the criminal complaint, Williams' grandmother told authorities that he called her and said he was homicidal and suicidal. He said he "planned to 'shoot up' a local hotel and then commit suicide by cop," the U.S. attorney's office said. "The grandmother could hear Williams manipulating a firearm on the phone and was able to persuade Williams to let her pick him up" and take him to a hospital for psychiatric care, the complaint added. Williams later told police officers that he was staying in a hotel, and according to the complaint, this is what they found when they searched it: "an AK-47 rifle, seventeen magazines loaded with 7.62 ammunition, a black trench coat, multiple knives, black tactical pants, a black t-shirt that said 'Let 'Em Come', and black tactical gloves with the fingers cut off."

It's sad to think that so many of these events could have been stopped if someone close had been able to get through to the perpetrators in time.

Hah. I don't know how useful the story is, of course. It's an intuitive answer. If someone is going to do something crazy and dangerous that might kill a bunch of people, you would think that maybe someone in their lives could talk them down. How does our society increase the likelihood of that happening though?

The irony of this thread

So now rifles are scary and people carrying should be seen as threats? And anyone seen with a rifle is about to be a mass shooter? Or what is the point of this thread?

Moral of the story, if you see someone carrying a gun, even if it's legal in your state, call the police on them or detain them at gunpoint.

...if you're an off duty firefighter who is armed during a fire alarm after the manager of a property has freaked out and pulled it causing hysteria because a guy is walking around in body armor clearly carrying a rifle with 100 rounds of ammo and a pistol on his hip shortly after some well publicized mass shootings. Whew. Did I leave any details out?

Well, it initially wasn't to see how many liberal retards would publicly defend a guy who was about to shoot up a Walmart, but in hindsight I guess it should have been.

If only he'd killed a couple of dozen people instead of being stopped first; then you'd all be happy.
