Jumping into this side conversation about the Chargers to say that I am surprised they didn’t bring in weapons this year, but I do think teams can accumulate weapons faster than building their foundation and Chargers could add a couple guys one of these offseasons, probably next, and take a leap. Nothing for us to worry about though.

As for Rashee, I’m split. I like our model of developing young talent at WR and avoiding big contracts, but I think Rashee is aligned to take over Kelce’s role at #1 and timing will be right to swap one large offensive contract for another. I’d also point out that his injury and suspension should affect the terms of the contract. I’m not ready to give him a max deal, I haven’t seen enough from him, he’s not Chase or Jefferson. Hell, Worthy might still end up being the more impactful receiver, he’s got more juice than Rice for sure. So ultimately, I hope we can work out a long term contact on a team freindlyish deal.
Rice, Worthy, Royals, Wiley, & Smith could be our future young core and the next chapter for Mahomes. |

That said, you can also build a team in both FA and the draft. If a team already has a LT and wants to go playmaker before RT in the draft, I don't think it's a bad decision to backfill RT in FA like the Bengals did. Especially given that Chase was widely considered a relative generational talent at WR. Bad decisions on the interior OL also factor in. You can't be total shit across the board from LG to RG at the same time and that's as much an issue that the Bengals ran into as anything. |

Since this puss case case is coming right around the corner I did a little research. Don't shoot the messenger I'm simply copy/pasting:
Assessing the likelihood of Rashee Rice facing prison time involves considering the serious charges against him, the potential sentences they carry under Texas law, and various factors that can influence legal outcomes, including expert legal opinions and mitigating circumstances. **Potential for Prison Time Based on Charges:** Rashee Rice faces eight felony charges in connection with the March 2024 Dallas crash: * **One count of aggravated assault:** This is a second-degree felony in Texas, punishable by **2 to 20 years in prison** and a fine of up to $10,000. * **One count of collision involving serious bodily injury:** This is a third-degree felony, which can carry a prison sentence of **up to 10 years**. Some interpretations of Texas law suggest that certain third-degree felonies might have a minimum prison sentence of 2 years, though this can depend on the specifics of the case and conviction. * **Six counts of collision involving injury:** Each of these charges can result in imprisonment for **up to 5 years** and a fine. If Rice were convicted on multiple charges and sentences were to run consecutively (which is a less common outcome, especially for a first-time offender), the theoretical maximum prison time could be substantial (as some reports have noted, potentially up to 35 years). However, concurrent sentencing or plea agreements often result in less than the maximum. **Expert Opinions and Mitigating Factors:** Several legal experts have weighed in on Rice's situation, offering perspectives that suggest prison time is not a certainty: * **First-Time Offender Status:** Rice is reportedly a first-time offender with no prior criminal record. This is a significant mitigating factor that judges typically consider during sentencing. * **Nature of Injuries:** While the crash resulted in injuries, including "serious bodily injury" for at least one victim, some legal commentary has noted that if the injuries were not "critical" or life-threatening in the long term, it might influence sentencing towards alternatives to lengthy incarceration. * **Cooperation and Remorse:** Rice's attorney has stated that he has taken "full responsibility" and is cooperating with authorities. Efforts to compensate the victims, which Rice has indicated he intends to do, can also be viewed favorably by the court. * **Legal Representation:** Being well-represented legally can significantly impact the outcome of a case, potentially leading to reduced charges through plea bargains or more favorable sentencing if convicted. * **Victim Input:** In some cases, the victims' wishes regarding sentencing (e.g., prioritizing restitution over incarceration) can be a factor, although the prosecution ultimately makes charging and sentencing recommendations. Dallas defense attorney George Milner commented that he didn't believe the victims would want Rice to go to prison and would more likely want compensation. **Countervailing Considerations:** * **Severity of Actions:** The alleged act of street racing, causing a multi-vehicle crash, and initially leaving the scene are serious offenses that endangered multiple individuals. The presence of video evidence of the crash is also a factor for the prosecution. * **Public Message:** Prosecutors may sometimes seek stricter penalties to send a message about the dangers of such reckless behavior. The Dallas Police Chief has emphasized a commitment to a thorough investigation to ensure accountability. **Overall Likelihood:** While the charges Rashee Rice faces are serious and carry the potential for significant prison sentences, several legal experts have suggested that actual prison time, particularly a lengthy sentence, is not a foregone conclusion. Factors such as his first-time offender status, cooperation, and efforts to make restitution could lead to outcomes such as probation, fines, a shorter period of incarceration (with one speculative mention of 180 days if jail time were imposed), or a plea deal to lesser charges. However, the possibility of prison time cannot be dismissed, especially given the felony nature of the charges and the "collision involving serious bodily injury" charge, which can carry more significant penalties. The ultimate outcome will depend on the full details of the investigation, the strength of the evidence, the legal strategies employed, and the discretion of the court if he is convicted. His legal proceedings are ongoing, and no conviction or sentencing has occurred as of May 2025. |

PFT had an article quoting Ryne Nutt as saying they see Royals as an identical player to Rice. Clearly, they view him as insurance for the injury, legal and contract situation:
https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profoo...to-rashee-rice Chiefs see rookie receiver Jalen Royals as a similar player to Rashee Rice By Michael David Smith Published May 17, 2025 09:08 AM The Chiefs drafted Utah State wide receiver Jalen Royals in the fourth round thinking he could have a similar role in their offense to Rashee Rice. Chiefs director of player personnel Ryne Nutt said Royals shows a lot of the same traits that Rice showed when the Chiefs made him a second-round draft pick in 2023. “His game is very similar to Rashee’s,’' Nutt said, via Adam Teicher of ESPN. “He’s got big hands, strong hands, and he’s very good after the catch. [Run after the catch] is a big part of our offense. That’s something we look for in receivers. We look for speed. The kid had that 4.40 [40-yard dash at the scouting combine]. We look for strength, and he has that. Then we look for route running and that’s probably an area where Rashee had to kind of develop a little bit, so we kind of thought they were similar in that respect.’' Having a player who can do the same thing as Rice in the offense is important to the Chiefs because Rice is coming off a season-ending knee injury, and because Rice could face league discipline for an incident last year in which Dallas police said he raced his Lamborghini and caused a chain reaction collision that resulted in multiple injuries. The Chiefs hope Rice is available, but if he isn’t, they hope Royals can fill his absence. “With Rashee coming back from injury and trying to get right, the hopes are this kid can step in and try to get some playing time and help us out,” Nutt said. If Royals can play like Rice, but stay healthy and stay in trouble off the field, he’s going to be an important target for Patrick Mahomes. |
