Early 2019 Mock (9/27)

1. CB DeAndre Baker, Georgia (5'11" 188)
A shut-down corner in the mold of Denzel Ward of the Browns but without quite as much speed. With that comes the chance he's taken much earlier than where the Chiefs project to pick. It could be a position loaded at the top though, with Michael Jackson, Amani Oruwariye, Blessuan Austin, Blace Brown, and potential declares Greedy Williams, Trayvon Mullen, and Kendall Sheffield.

2. OLB Porter Gustin, USC (6'5" 260)
When he's been healthy, Gustin has been a wrecking ball for USC. He looked poised to break out as a Junior but then broke his toe and tore his biceps, essentially shutting him down most of the season. He looks again like a freak this year with 5 sacks in 4 games but I'm wagering teams will knock him down a notch with the injury history.

2. FS Juan Thornhill, Virginia (6'0" 212)
Thornhill has played CB and FS for Virginia and has done both extremely well. With his size and tackling ability to go along with ball skills and coverage ability, he'd probably be best playing safety in the NFL over corner but either is a possibility.

3. OC Erik McCoy, Texas A&M (6'4" 315)
It speaks volumes that the Chiefs are carrying 4 lineman that can play center aside from Morse (Reiter, Devey, & Erving plus Murray on the PS), so I do believe they'll be looking to replace him in 2019. McCoy is that mobile technician that Reid seems to love.

5. DE Ryan Bee, Marshall (6'7" 280)
Bee is a non-stop motor type of player for the Herd and has great production to back it up, plus experience playing in a 3-4. For Bee, he'll need to add weight and play strenght for the pros but he has a good tool set to mould.

6. ILB Ulysees Gilbert, Akron (6'1" 225)
Gilbert is a safety-turned-linebacker that is all over the field for Akron, similar to 2018 pick Dorian O'Daniel. Given the Chiefs' struggles in coverage underneath, they may want to add more competition on the inside.

7. WR DeAndre Thompkins, Penn State (5'11" 185)
The Chiefs are set to lose De'Anthony Thomas and Chris Conley in the offseason. While Byron Pringle probably has a spot locked up there, they'll need to continue to add competition. Thompkins is a reliable receiver with speed and a solid return specialist.

I would be all for drafting nothing but secondary and dline.

Like they seemed to do this year, but not a bunch of ****ing tweener players and projects.

I want to draft another TE fairly high. Gota start looking for Kelce replacements for the future

Crow, in your opinion who are the most versatile DL or Passrushers?

Veach seems to favor passrushers who can play in a 4-3 set?

IMO, Ford won't be resigned due to him being a small one dimensional speed passrusher who is useless during running plays.

Well, I'll give you a preliminary list because I haven't had the time this past year to watch tons of games like normal. I'll catch up eventually... I will say it does look pretty loaded and a lot of these guys are probably going early but KC will have their shots at a couple. Lists are of no particular ranking. Quite a few Juniors in here though that will have to be sorted out.

Here's my short list for more of 3-4 OLB:

Nick Bosa, OSU - May go #1 overall
Austin Bryant, Clemson - This D-Line is LOADED which actually scares me a little.
Porter Gustin, USC
Montez Sweat, Mississippi State
Chase Winovich, Michigan
Clelin Ferrell, Clemson
Joe Jackson, Miami
Carl Granderson, Wyoming
Jaylon Ferguson, Lousiana Tech
Joe Gaziano, Northwestern
Josh Allen, Kentucky - I'll put him here, but I see him more as a Jamie Collins type in the NFL but may be a best fit for a defense like Seattle as that pass rushing 4-3 OLB.
Dre'Mont Jones, Ohio State

Here's my list for DE/DT:

Ed Oliver, Houston - Probably a top 3 pick
Derrick Brown, Auburn
Jeffery Simmons, Mississippi State
Raekwon Davis, Alabama
Rashan Gary, Michigan
Dexter Lawrence, Clemson
Christian Wilkins, Clemson
Jerry Tillery, Notre Dame
Terry Beckner Jr., Missouri
Daniel Wise, Kansas
Youhanna Ghaifan, Wyoming
Ryan Bee, Marshall

Did you ever put together a draft site, kccrow?

So it’s a good year to have a need at corner?

Great.

I put that project to bed when I had my 3rd child and my mother passed 2 weeks apart... So much time once again raising a little one, and while our boys help out its a lot of work all over again. Then, since neither of us has parents left alive, we really don't have much in the way of occasional relief and relaxation either. I thought "maybe in 5-6 years when our daughter is older" but the way the NFL is going it may be moot haha. I haven't watched half as much college ball over the past year and a half as I used to.

How deep is the safety group? Feel like the Chiefs will have to look there.

Looks incredibly weak to me even if Juniors declare. Might be the weakest position group in the draft. I don't like the TE group much either at first pass.

I like Abram, Adderly, Thornhill, Johnson, and Rapp to varying degrees. I dunno, might have to do some thorough review of this group over the coming months to see if there's much in the trash.

I'd venture to say that if the Chiefs want one worth a shit, they may have to dive in head first in round 2 else they'll be dumpster picking in round 6 again.

Might be the position to invest in via FA, whether it be Earl Thomas or someone else

Don't know anything about the players, but I love this draft based on the positions taken. A 315 pound center would be nice to have, hopefully not a pushover in run blocking like Morse.

I don't see the Chiefs investing a 2nd round pick on a OLB for the 3rd year in a row, even though I like Porter.

If they add to the spot, I feel it would be a FA.

As for Round 1 targets: Josh Allen would be a great add if he's in the Chiefs range. 3 down LB that can actually cover and has game changing ability. He and Hitchens would be a hell of a duo.

If not, I'd be lying if I didn't day TE Albert Okwuegbunan wasn't super intriguing.

Okwuegbunan, Kelce, Hill and Watkins would be insane.
