NFL Rumors: Mahomes, Watson atop KC's QB wish list

From SportingNews.com:

http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/news...j17r8odsobcbca

Quote:
— The Chiefs, who have been linked to most quarterbacks during the 2017 NFL Draft process so far, are in no rush to find a quarterback savior. With Alex Smith slated to be the starter in 2017 but ideally not in 2018, the Chiefs are looking for a passer with the highest upside without needing him to play as a rookie — a dream scenario for a quarterback prospect.

— I believe Patrick Mahomes is the Chiefs' QB1 from what I’ve heard, but Deshaun Watson makes sense as well. They’ll need to trade up for both. If they stay at 27, the one quarterback whom they could shockingly have interest in is Davis Webb of California. They’ve also shown interest in Nathan Peterman and Brad Kaaya, but likely don’t value either as top-two rounders.
Now, the writer of this got all of his info in the article from speaking to FO people and scouts at the combine. You can question the validity, but the Chiefs did meet with all of the players mentioned at the combine.

If this report is accurate, the Chiefs could indeed be on the path to Patrick Mahomes or Deshaun Watson holding up their jersey in 7 weeks in Philadelphia.

In addition to the dumb comments on Mahomes, he was raving about how great the Chiefs defense was at the end of the video. That defense might have been great in early 2017, but they sure as hell were not elite in 2018. This team would not have made the playoffs this year without the "project" at QB.

That actually seems to happen a lot on NFL shows.

Truth be told, I probably do that some with my female colleagues.

Mahomes is changing the sport, much like Steph Curry changed basketball.

Before the draft, many counted Mahomes out based on the track record of QBs who came from similar systems. Now teams will do anything and everything they can to find their own QB who plays like Patrick.

Only problem is, it’s not nearly that simple. Just like you can’t find another Steph Curry.

For sure.

The trend of downgrading spread QBs was slowing eroding, and MVPat knocked the wall down completely.

Not only are they drafting in hopes of finding the next Mahomes, they are hiring coaches who they hope can develop the next Mahomes.

Probably why Kyler Murray will get drafted way above where he should be.

His potential impact over the long term is huge, but I wonder about the future of football in general. 20-30 years from now, will kids still choose football over safer sports?

Mahomes uses his shortstop and pitcher background to make himself comfortable throwing from insane arm angles and body positions in football. He has the potential to influence a lot of kids who might play baseball. Just wonder if the safety issues will eventually kill the league.

Yeah, I think he’s a dynamic player but I absolutely cannot get behind drafting a 5’9” QB to be my franchise guy in the first round.

It’s not that I don’t think he can’t make plays, I know he could with the right coaching. But can you ever become a viable pocket passer at that height? Guys like Brees and Mayfield already have to adjust their release points and footwork to make up for their height, and Murray looks to be a good 1 1/2 to 2 inches shorter.

I was thinking this too. How many kids will pick football over baseball because of him. I know if I were a kid in that position id choose football to be like Patrick and baseball was my favorite sport to play.

Another thing about his height is that most of the time you find out the guy is actually around an inch shorter than what he is listed in college.

Brees and Mayfield were also well-built.

They always looked the part of an NFL QB

OU lists him at 5' 10" but it would not surprise me if he's closer to 5' 8" at the Combine. Tech listed Crabtree at 6' 3" and he ended up 6' 1.5" at the Combine. Pretty big lie when he was in college, lol

Brees really didn't look like an NFL QB until he got out of San Diego.

He was like an even more conservative Alex Smith there.
