*** Official 2017 Royals Offseason Repository ***

The reign is over. Time to begin the quest for the next one.

Interesting offseason opens for the Royals. Will they go all in for one last shot with this crew? Will they re-tool for 2018 and beyond? Will Dayton Moore actually decrease payroll this time?

Trades, free agent signings, rumors, plans, proposals... dump 'em all here, for this is... the offseason repository!

Royals Top Prospects, 2017

This is a list that’s going to seem a little bleak initially, as Raul Mondesi got enough ABs to age out of the prospect rankings (just barely – at 135 ABs, he is not rookie eligible). But that said, I like the talent and feel like this is a system that will actually be underrated by the prospect services.

Spoiler!

Those million dollar buyouts really annoy me for some reason.

Figure he gets 5 games subbing for Hosmer.

If Moss is the primary DH vs RHP, that still leaves 40-50 starts vs lefties at that spot. Cuthbert figures to be part of that solution as well. And he also is insurance if Moss, who is not the most durable guy out there, misses some time.

I haven't heard anything about him as a 2B option/solution. I know the team was planning to go that way before Moustakas's injury last year, but I am skeptical he can stick there. If he does, obviously you run with that and give him 120+ starts there.

Otherwise, I think he's a 75-90 game piece for you in 2017, who provides nice insurance at 3B and DH while also giving you a platoon option for Moustakas and Moss.
He's far too good a hitter to be a part-time player, IMO.

I remember thinking what a gutsy and probably wrongheaded thing to write, given the possibility of losing and looking silly.

Eric Hosmer has become and will likely remain one of my all-time favorite players, mostly because he conducts himself like a champion, a true leader on and off the field.

You alternate all the way down. And you have a couple guys in the bottom third that can take you out of the yard. You have legit power 2-8.

Cuthbert or Mondesi have a shot at 2B?

In all seriousness, I wonder what Cuthbert might actually cost, especially if he doesn't make a solid conversion to 2b.

I would say the Royals have no interest in moving him this year because they need Moustakas insurance. But if they get Moustakas re-signed or extended, surely he'd be made available.

The Cards still have precisely jack shit long-term at 3b but a wealth of pitching prospects. We have Luke Weaver at roughly the same age and service time as Cuthbert who projects as a nice long-term 3 or 4 in the rotation.

He got whacked around a bit during his call-up last year but it was really an issues of occasionally just being too hittable; a command vs. control thing. Strikeout and walk numbers were actually pretty good (walks a little high but nothing too far out of range and also completely out of character). He just had a tendency to give into hitters and groove one if he got behind; not shocking for a young pitcher really. And frankly, giving up 11 ER in your last 2.2 innings is going to make anyone's line look worse than he actually performed, especially over a small sample size.

Weaver for Cuthbert looks like a nice 'baseball trade' if Moustakas were extended. The Cards get their long-term 3b option and the Royals would get a middle of the rotation starter with some upside. The Royals would gain a year of age and a year of team control (perhaps even 2 if the Cards keep Weaver down more this year as I expect), but that's not a deal-breaker.

I still think there's a trade to be made between these two squads.

That's a deal that has some promise.

Most of the Cardinals fans i interact with would probably say they'd rather have Johnny Peralta straight up than Cuthbert, and would never consider moving Weaver.

When's a prospect just a young veteran? Sure, pitchers get hurt and get hurt all the time.

But TINSTAAPP is largely the belief that there's so many steps/hurdles to clear along the way that until a guy gets to the big leagues without his arm having torn clear from his body, you can't count on him.

Weaver made it to the big leagues seemingly intact and showing the same ability to get swings and misses. That's that big final step to establishing yourself less as a prospect and more as a young major leaguer.
