Country Music_Ken Burns Documentary
Anybody watching this? I read about it in the inflight magazine on the way home yesterday and watched the first chapter last night.
If you like American history done right like Ken Burns can do it, this thing looks good. The first chapter was all background with some cool stories, commentary by Waylon, Dolly, and others, and history of the genre I did not know. Some really interesting photos of the early 1900s. From there it looks like it goes through Hank Williams then Elvis, Cash, all the way up into the 90s over 8 episodes. I'm not a country music guy but I'll be watching chapter two next. I loaded the PBS app Roku to be able to watch the whole thing on demand for free. Or get it here. https://www.pbs.org/kenburns/country-music/ |

I like both kinds of music. Country and western.

A local C&W DJ named Cactus Jack Call was killed in December in a car wreck at US 40 and Sterling. The memorial show was in early March when the weather can be dicey. Patsy's private plane actually was held up a day because of crappy weather. When they flew east towards Nashville, they ran into that same weather the next day. If she would have waited one more day they would have made it safely.

I was in Oildale today to watch the game at a buddy's house who lives in Bakersfield, (just over a bridge). We ate at a little restaurant, there were pictures of Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Bob Wills, Dwight Yokum. An old waitress told us...."that was where Buck would sit"......true or not, ok, cool!
None of my family or friends can figure out why I'm so into okie, rockabilly, hillbillie, country and that High Lonesome sound out of the Appalachians. I can't explain it. The great Hazel Dickens https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HwP3f2oaA8 Ola Belle Reed singing her classic..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsRRY5k5Psg You'd want to mix them in with Flatt & Scruggs, The Stanley Brothers, Bill Monroe. Love this.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOr60MxIvvE Last edited by Ubeja Vontell; 09-23-2019 at 12:39 AM.. |

Just FYI for everyone checking out this thread. There is also a live concert that accompanies the documentary. Haven't watched the whole thing yet, but so far...excellent!

The sixth installment tonight should be a fun episode.
Gram Parsons, B-bender guitarist Clarence White and the Byrds were some of the best pure country musicians ever in terms of instrumental play. But their vocals sounded closer to The Beatles and some of the folk artists during the time. They also were associated with being hippies because they were based out of Southern California, and Parsons wore a nudie suit with marijuana leaves on it. The Byrds, with Parsons, were invited to the Grand Ole Opry in 1968, and they were booed off stage. They were not accepted by the Nashville establishment, but had a profound influence on future country legends such as Emmylou Harris. Parsons and Harris were a duo before the former died of a drug overdose. |

Watched all eight episodes and was pleased with all of them. Another great job by Burns and crew.
