SCHEFTER- Crennel to Chiefs Imminent

Giants' candidate Crennel joins Chiefs

One-time Giants assistant and former Browns head coach Romeo Crennel will not be the new Giants defensive coordinator. Crennel has been hired to run the Chiefs defense.

Crenell never interviewed with Tom Coughlin but the Giants did express some interest.

One candidate Coughlin has already interviewed, former Bills head coach Perry Fewell, was in Chicago to speak with head coach Lovie Smith about the Bears defensive coordinator job. Fewell is considered the front-runner.

Fewell, once Coughlin's defensive backs coach with the Jaguars, met last Thursday with Coughlin with the understanding he was in the running for the Bears defensive coordinator job. Fewell worked in St. Louis and Chicago for Smith and it appears the two will work together again.

Another interesting possibility: Mike Zimmer. His contract will soon expire with the Bengals. Zimmer successfully ran the defenses for the Cowboys and Falcons and did a solid job this season in Cincinnati. Zimmer may attract some interest around the league as a potential head-coaching candidate.

Tom Cable is expected to be fired as head coach of the Raiders and if he is, Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride is again likely to get an interview. Gilbride last year interviewed for the job.

No, I think he's awful.

Shanahan thought otherwise.

I have to say, Haynesworth at NT in a 3-4 is definitely intriguing.

It all depends on whether or not he actually wants to play.

Shannahan hasn't had a great track record with Defensive coaches really. It would be interesting to see if Washington really was interested in Crennel.

I'm kind of glad the Chiefs didn't end up signing Haynesworth he's certainly a gamble.

Haslett was said to want to bring Krumrie as his DL coach wherever he landed. They did interview former giants DL coach mike Waufle today though.

I know I'll get flamed for this, but I'm REALLY glad we haven't signed some huge contract for a player when we still have no true identity for this team. We have a bit clearer picture on defense, but its still sketchy. Even this year I'd be happy with signing a FA, but last year it would have been a piss-poor idea.

I actually would only like to see one big acquisition, and that's Wilfork. I could be wrong, but I think putting someone like him in the very core of our offense is like plugging up a leak. The running D would almost HAVE to get better, and that would allow our other players to get even better on the pass too. I think with a stud NT we'd have a good defense. Not DAMN good (yet) but good.

Crennel signed the papers last night. Paperwork has been filed with the NFL. The deal is done.

Crennel, Chiefs courtship bogs down
Posted by Mike Florio on January 13, 2010 7:38 AM ET
Amid reports that former Browns coach Romeo Crennel will become the next defensive coordinator of the Chiefs, Crennel's agent says that the job has not yet been offered to Crennel.

"Would he take it if they offered the job?" agent Joe Linta told the Kansas City Star. "I suppose he would."

Linta told the Star that Crennel has discussed the position with Chiefs coach Todd Haley. Linta also said that the Chiefs get the "first shot," and that four other teams are interested in Crennel.

One such team is the Giants. We've also heard that the Redskins made a run at him, but the Redskins have since hired Jim Haslett.

The Dolphins also could be interested, which would pit Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli against his father-in-law, Miami V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells.

Regardless of how it all works out, putting public pressure on the Chiefs likely isn't an ideal strategy. Unless Linta's ultimate objective is to place Crennel elsewhere.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Weis and Crennel are huge upgrades over what we had (or didn't have).

Reminder, I got the info about the meeting between Pioli, Clark and Haley the last week of the season and out of that Crennel and Weiss being offered the jobs 2 weeks ago from "the source". Everything since then is from another contact. So take this with a grain of salt.
