And is 31, same age Kendrys (supposedly) was when we signed him off the scrap heap. DJ is probably right he will suck, but he might not be, and as they say "Beggars can't be choosers". We gotta do somethin, and rotating in a similar value hitter like Salvy isn't really a better option IMO. Then there's Pedro Alvarez, Mike Napoli, |

Moreland signed with Boston.
LoMo just never became the guy I thought he'd be; he really seemed to have the tools to be an outstanding hitter but for whatever reason it hasn't come together for him. Maybe a lifetime spent in pitchers parks? His age 23 season is the stuff 3 hitters are built from; great approach, solid power. He sure appears to have stalled and for the life of me I can't figure out why.

I advocated pretty hard for Brandon Moss as a DH solution before 2015, and he might be a solid cheap/low-end signing if you're looking for a platoon bat for DH... But he is a guy you get to hit 6-7 and help you in the regular season, not a lineup centerpiece, at this point.
Those hip surgeries post-2014 seem to have robbed him of some of the physical ability needed to hit good pitching. I think they're are going to be a lot of cheap DH options out there, and it makes sense to have a platoon-type lefty to take 400 ABs there on days you face a RH pitcher, since the other guys you'd most be trying to shield with a rotating DH are guys you'd still want in the lineup versus lefthand pitchers (Cain, Soler, Perez). Re: Perez and DH ABs... I think his overall numbers would improve if he was getting a DH day and an off day every week. His numbers tank when he's getting overworked behind the plate. Not sure the relevance. Sal's defense outweighs his offense. His slumps at the plate aren't a net negative for us.

Most of the time. But for an offensively challenged team that DOES have a quality defender as a backup, who still provides you plus defense, I think it's worth it to keep Perez more fresh and spike his offensive numbers (and protect your long-term investment). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

IF he can hit on his days off. I suspect he will improve, but better at the plate than another option? He certainly wouldn't do the 30 bombs Kendrys did this year. I'd be concerned about a lineup card that had Salvy and Butera on it, esp surrounded by a bunch of other sub-100 wrC dudes.

The question isn't just his day off. It's if, by making sure he catches 5/7 games, with a day off AND a day off from catching duties, if he can be a better offensive player in general. If Perez can improve his offense by 15-20 percent by being fresher and more rested (which honestly would not surprise me), it's well worth giving him 20 DH days. But it's probably all moot, anyway. I expect Yost to continue to play him into the ground and damage his hitting every year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

What is it that I'm missing about "Salvador Perez: hitter of baseballs"?
He's a good catcher. He's a fine hitter...for a catcher. But in what universe is Sal actually a good hitter in a vacuum? He swings at EVERYTHING. Like, he makes Randal Grichuk look selective. 57 walks in his last 1700 PAs? That's incredible. And 9 of those are of the intentional variety. I honestly don't think I've ever seen an unintentional walk rate below 3%. And that comes from someone who has an okay amount of power, making it even more incredible. Some hitters will walk just because pitchers refuse to give into them when they're behind in the count (knowing that the hitter could lose it). It would appear that this rarely happens to Salvy and I have to assume that's in large part due to the fact that he's never actually ahead in the count. His line drive rate is about average but he hits way too many fly balls for a guy that plays in a park that suppresses power (and who probably isn't a natural HR hitter either way). His quality of contact is okay (average to slightly below) but he's become something of a dead pull hitter making him more and more playable defensively. I guess this is a roundabout way of saying that perhaps you shouldn't be doing anything to 'free' the DH spot for Salvador Perez on his days off - you should just give him more days off and put a better hitter at DH. Because in a lot of ways, Salvador Perez is pretty much a replacement level offensive performer. Sure, maybe extra rest will improve those hard hit ball figures and maybe he won't need to cheat as much in the summer months so he won't be pulling quite so many either, but you're just talking about improvements in the margins there. He's not going to become a selective hitter and anybody that swings at nearly 50% of the pitches thrown outside the zone to him (also remarkable) is just an out waiting to happen. I just don't see the upshot in 'freeing' him to take ABs as a DH. Get him the rest he needs by simply resting him.

What Duncan is referring to is Sal's drop every year in production as the season (his body?) wears on. The numbers are pretty stark:
First Half: 1245 PA 48HR .282 AVG Second Half: 1311 PA 39HR .263 AVG To test that, I looked up the others, Moose/Hos/Gordon/Cain and their numbers go the other way. Probably the hotter weather boosting some power and/or production. One guy followed Sal's decline in the 2nd Half. You know, the other guy we play into the ground: http://www.fangraphs.com/statsplits....on=SS&season=0 |
