Saying that doesn't mean I hate kaiju movies, it just means I had some issues with this one. Things that I thought should have been done better, with both the technology and the quality of the talent involved, both in front of and behind the camera. YMMV and I'm completely fine with you not having the same qualms with the movie that I did. I'm not trying to convince you or anybody else of anything, just explaining why I didn't quite love it. It just wasn't quite the movie I hoped it was going to be, with all the folks involved. I was disappointed. Didn't hate it. Not saying it was bad. Just that I hope #2 is a bit... more. |

I don't know about the talent behind the camera, but in front of it? Yeah, wasn't expecting any Oscar performances here. I think the main point for many of the fans of the movie is that this genre has never been about plots, or story arcs, or character development. It's been about massive creatures/robots fighting each other. That's it. The rest is just filler in-between what the real movie is about. Like porn, that filler is intended to get you to the action as quickly as possible. This genre is not Sex in the City. It's Debbie Does Dallas.

OK, so just to be clear. It is OK to be a fan of a genre, even if you dislike everything within that genre?

If I didn't like Hunnam for his role in SoA... I probably would have thought the casting for the lead role was "meh". But honestly, in a movie like this, I didn't care... it's more about big ****ing robots that kick ass.

I enjoyed the first one. Thought it was fun and loved the aesthetic. I understand all the critiques too, but in the end, I had fun watching it, and that's all I really wanted out of that movie.

The following is my opinion:
The characters sucked, the story made no sense, and I was not impressed with the overall look of the film. The FX were great. The monsters and mechs looked great. The framing around the action was terrible and distracted from what could have been a much better movie. JMO of course. Not really too concerned with a sequel unless they it's with a whole new cast of characters that might be interesting. |

I thought it was good and fun. Not a great film, but fun. I think it pretty much fit into Del Toro's style. Hes a quirky and unique film maker. He doesnt really make huge audience pleasers like a Michael Bay. His movies are shot dark and murky.

I think they are saying anyone that likes the genre, but hated the movie and has not stated which movies are better than it. Those people.
I agree, if you said you hated the movie for what it was, you need to provide a better movie. |

I'm just asking those who didn't like this movie, but profess to like the genre, to give me an example of this genre done right. So far, I'd equate the disparaging comments I've seen as someone going to a Keystone Cops film and then complaining that everybody kept falling down.
Award winning acting and character driven story arcs were never a part of this genre. If you bitch about the absurdity of an Evil Dead movie and someone suggests Bruce Campbell movies might not be for you, a response along the lines of "I'm fine with the genre. Army of Darkness just wasn't very good" just doesn't make sense. What "wasn't very good" to you is present in every other film of the genre, including the new Godzilla movie everybody has the same complaints about. We've already lost the vampire et al genre to tweens and Danielle Steele. Please don't try turning giant robot / monster fighting movies into some sort of Days of Our Lives drama. More Robots, Less Crying More Monsters, Less Romance More Fighting, Less Drama
