49ers DC candidate trashed the team's Super Bowl performance during a radio appearance

During an appearance last week on “Sports Shop,” a North Carolina-based sports radio show, the Kansas City coach and the hosts discussed San Francisco’s decision to fire defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. While he speculated that the move was for the best because of some underlying season-long tension with the team — he even said Wilks probably sees this as a “blessing” — he also said that Wilks shouldn’t be held responsible for the Super Bowl loss, and that there’s plenty of blame to go toward the offense.


“If you want to talk about the game, their offense went 3-for-12 on third down,” Merritt said. “Our offense went 9-for-19, but if your offense is going 3-for-12 on third down, is that Wilks’ fault? If your tight end who’s All-Pro, [George] Kittle, only has one catch for 4 yards, is that Wilks’ fault?... And then No. 11, who was trying to fight all game — Ako, I don’t know — he only had 40-something yards, was that Wilks’ fault?”

I don't think we need to be worried.
