I think this is a real possibility. There is an extremely convincing theory out there that Melisandre is the new Nissa Nissa and that Lightbringer, the sword that is prophecied to defeat the NK, will be forged by being thrust through her heart the way the original Azor Ahai forged his sword by thrusting it through Nissa Nissa's heart. Would make sense for Jon to try to kill the NK with his sword and it shatters or doesn't work (and the NK was made with dragon glass into his heart, so I don't see dragonglass killing him). So Jon then sees Melisandre in Kings Landing or somewhere and she brings him the new sword and he forges it in her heart and uses it to kill the NK.

I think Melisdandre is the giveaway that the battle versus the Night King will not end in this episode. Melisandre is not back yet. She needs to show back up and then help Jon kill the NK. I think the Melisandre as the new Nissa Nissa is a pretty convincing theory, and that may be how it goes down. But even if that's not exactly it, she's got to have some involvement in the final defeat of the NK, and so that can't happen until she shows back up. Plus she said on the show to Varys last season that she would come back to Westeros one last time and would die there, so until she shows up, I don't see the NK being defeated completely.

Also, if you take that a step further, Arya should survive this battle as well. As Melisandre was taking Gendry away from the Brotherhood on the show in season 4 or 5, she specifically told Arya that she would see Arya again. So until that also happens, Arya can't die.

The only thing that would throw a wrench into these matters is if Melisandre somehow turns up at Winterfell before or during this battle, but that seems pretty unlikely given that the battle is about to start and she's not there.

Here is the video that explains the Melisandre as the new Nissa Nissa theory. As I said, it is pretty convincing:
