I honestly think the whole "raw" narrative comes from a few things:

1. Mahomes ability to throw off the back foot, across his body, into coverage, off balance. These are things normal humans are trained not to do, because their physical gifts are limited. So, people see him do these things you're "not supposed" to do. Really, what they should realize is that you're not supposed to BE ABLE to do these things. And he can. So, they think he needs to be taught like they were. He doesn't.

2. They think he's all raw physical talent. They weren't paying attention to the word coming out of Chiefs' camp predraft. Reid sat with him for HOURS at the whiteboard and was blown away by his mental retention and capacity. This is why they drafted him. Dude has the arm of Favre and the mind of Brees.

3. None of the "experts" had him pegged as a top QB in the draft at all. So, when they get exposed by the best offensive minds in the game all clamoring to be able to take him, they have to save face. So, they say, "well, sure Sean Payton and Andy Reid and Bruce Arians all were killing each other to draft him, but we weren't wrong - they wanted to develop him. MAYBE it will work out, but he wasn't ready enough for us to rate him as highly as he obviously should have been. NOT OUR FAULT."
