They didn't do themselves any favors, but it's not their fault that the offense kept going 3-and-out or worse. More offensive snaps means fewer defensive snaps means fewer chances for the defense to give up big plays. It also means the defense doesn't get completely worn down by halftime.
Again, the defense actually set the tone by forcing a punt on the first drive. A lack of offense put the defense in a position where breaking was much more likely than bending.
