I thought it was telling that there was so much focus on everybody else just standing there, dumbstruck, and he's finally the one who steps forward and does the hard thing. On top of asserting his role of leader of the group, doing what needed to be done while no one else was willing to.
I also thought the cinematography was great for that scene. Sophia played the part great, but the camera angle looking back a Rick, but more importantly down the barrel of the gun was awesome.
