I think there is somewhat of a misconception for "working hard leads to raises and promotions"... you're supposed to be good, productive, efficient at tasks assigned. You're already getting paid to do that.
It's generally doing things you're not assigned, consistently going well above and beyond (not just trying it out), etc.
Simply saying you worked really hard is like lifting a 5 pound weight a few times per day and expecting to get stronger.
