I wouldn't say I'm speaking fondly of him. I'm just being realistic.
That trade helped stabilize the organization in desperate times. In full hindsight, it has to be viewed as a win for the franchise.
2013:
Geno Smith (disaster)
Manuel (disaster)
Nassib (disaster)
Glennon (disaster)
Landry Jones (disaster)
2014:
Bortles (out of reach)
Manziel (disaster)
Carr (just good enough to not need replaced; Alex Smith lite)
Garoppolo (just good enough to not need replaced; Alex Smith lite)
2015:
Winston (out of reach)
Mariota (out of reach)
Brett Hundley (disaster)
Seimian (disaster)
2016:
Goff (out of reach)
Wentz (out of reach)
Paxton Lynch (disaster)
Hackenburg (disaster)
Brisset (disaster)
Dak Prescott (would have been a good pick, but you can kiss Mahomes goodbye)
All of these options are either terrible, not accessible realistically, or would result in us no longer drafting Mahomes.
The only other realistic option was Carson Palmer and if you go back in time and we pick him up instead, everything else changes up to this point. Palmer was probably not winning us a Super Bowl from 2013-2017 so nothing changes anyway. We do a lot of spinning our wheels until 2017 when we take Patrick regardless.
