I can see Veach approaching Sammy next Spring to do what Hitchens and Fish did. Convert some of that $21 million to a bonus to lower the cap hit.

That’s not going to be an option next year.
What Veach did was take those players base salary for this year and give them the whole thing in one check by converting it to a signing bonus. That takes that amount and spreads it out evenly over the remaining years of their contract and makes it guaranteed money as dead money.
Can’t do that for a guy in the last year of the deal.
What they can do with Sammy is re-sign him with a signing bonus to make his cap hit go from 21m down to 5-7m...or trade him and save 14m on the cap and get a pick.
