Yeah, the show is missing an opportunity to "peek behind the curtain" with Gus. Monologues like that don't work if we have no attachment to who that person is.
It'd be like if Mike gave the "I killed my boy" speech at the end of S3 of Breaking Bad instead of the half measures monologue. We'd have no context in which to connect to the character if that were the case.
