Maybe that wasn't the writers' intentions, but who knows with these guys. They did end the episode mid-hearing. Maybe there's more.

I agree with your take that the uninstalled battery should not current source, but they have established that Chuck did not like batteries - inability to change batteries in the tape recorder (although that was a ruse) and removing the battery operated clock in the court room.
