I don't look at it like a waste of time at all, actually. We went from the THE WORST franchise in the league - including the Browns - to being a perennial doubt digit wins playoff team. I think stability counts for a lot in the NFL, and we finally have it.
Smith was a stabilizing presence. He has had some very good moments in KC. While he simply is not good enough to get you over the hump in the playoffs, I will not complain about any situation that lands us a first round bye followed by a first round QB four months later.
It would have been better to have found our QB last year, I think, so as to walk on Smith now. I just don't hate him - can't, really - because I am too giddy about Mahomes.
