The Sharing Economy: how much you sharing?

Today I rented a car for two days on Turo. $80.40 complete total. It's the 8th time I've done it.

I've also done AirBnB, Lime Bike, Uber, Bird Scooter.

What services have you used in this new sharing economy? :hmmm:

Most people are 20-40 using these services and I'm nearly 56.

I took a Lyft home after the AFCCG because it was half the price of Uber ($19). I'm 55 and there isn't much else here other than Waitr. I've used it. but I have to have it delivered to work because I'm outside of delivery range.

HemiEd 02-08-2019 08:22 PM

I don't have much a clue what you are even talking about.

crispystl 02-08-2019 08:35 PM

Damn I've never tried Turo. I paid well over 100 bucks for 2 uber trips to an s from the airport. I could've had a damn car for the entire time I was there.

You will be shocked at how cheap it is. It's not like Hertz or Avis where you get a brand new car and pay $99 a day plus fees. This is 7-8 year sold vehicles for $35-50 a day all in.

Sorce 02-08-2019 09:00 PM

I've used uber and lyft regularly, vrbo in italy.

Rain Man 02-08-2019 09:03 PM

You're not claiming full credit, scho. Escorts are part of the sharing economy, too.

Rain Man 02-08-2019 09:11 PM

My views of the sharing economy:

1. Airbnb and home sharing - Nope. I figure the owners all have hidden cameras, and when I'm alone in a room by myself, things happen that no one should see.

2. Uber/Lyft and other car share stuff - Great concept when it started. Now it's basically non-certified taxis driven by third world taxi drivers in their off hours. I use them a lot, but I use them less now that they make the drivers beg for tips.

3. Scooters and bikes and stuff. I would certainly use these. I just don't have much opportunity. I have a large walking radius, and beyond that I'm generally taking a bus or I'm driving/ubering.

4. Rent someone's personal car. I've never done it. I'm not averse to it, but I like the implied homogeneity and reliability of the rental car companies. I'm not likely to try it for that reason.

5. Household stuff sharing. I saw something a while back about a site where you can share household goods back and forth. This is for things that you need once in a while but not often, like an electric screwdriver or a pony or a snowblower. It seems like it could be a good idea, but I don't remember the site and I seldom need something expensive that I don't already have.

Have you ever thought about an E-Bike. I really want one but can't justify spending the money.

To own? Or do the sharing thing?

I've been really enamored with buying a recumbent trike recently. But a friend who's a big bike guy is talking me out of it with logic and reason.

To own. There's a guy in my neighborhood that has one and he really gets around. Haven't seen him pedal yet. Don't get a trike , they make people think you're too stupid to keep your balance.

These are the cool looking trikes, not the 'can't balance yourself' trikes. I guess they do help with balance, though. I want to travel in one of these.

Use Airbnb for travel. Take Uber/Lyft Trips 3-4 times a month. Never had anyone ask for a tip.

Buehler445 02-08-2019 10:50 PM

There aren’t nearly enough people here to do that noise.

Closest I’ve come is drill wheat for a bunch of dudes last fall

RealSNR 02-08-2019 10:54 PM

I’m definitely into the sharing economy. I’ve shared Hepatitis C with over 50 people!

Fat Elvis 02-08-2019 11:41 PM

I prefer AirBnB to hotels any day of the week. I've also used Uber; some places it is much more reasonable than others. I'd be interested in Turo, but I'm not sure how the insurance works out for that......

used VRBO once and will never do it again. I check Uber from time to time and the prices are just too high for my area. I'll just not drink and keep it simple.

Check out Lyft for rides. Here it's half the price and mostly the same drivers.

Bwana 02-09-2019 07:27 AM

Hmm? I've used Uber/Lyft a few times around here. If I'm going to some kind of event and I know I'll be tipping a few back, or to get to the local airport. Out of state on business trips, I use them all the time.

Airbnb for travel? I'm intrigued, but I haven't done it yet. I would love to hear from more people who have gone that direction and about their experiences.

I can Uber/Lyft from my house to downtown, about a 7 min drive, for $7.00 including the 20% tip. We have several entertainment districts to visit there. We can have however many libations we care to and not worry. We know what the driver looks like, their rating by others, no cash changing hands. Where exactly they are coming to pick me up. Can communicate with them or let them have my GPS location if we moved since the request. I'll never take another cab unless no Lyft's/Uber's are available.

Yeah the cab service here blows. The rat soup, fly by night, Mickey Mouse outfit takes forever to arrive and has an irritating habit of picking up multiple people going to multiple destinations. This can drag out a 15 minute ride, into and hour or more. Uber and Lyft have been much more reliable and less expensive. I haven't used a local cab in years.

I've thought about it many times. I'm thinking of investing in a good bike. I currently have a 20 y/o street bike I ride to work sometimes. I like the thicker tires cause I can jump off curbs and take on trails. But the skinny tires are better for longer rides.

I've done the Lime Bike thing a few times, that's about it. And that was just because i was looking for a different way to get some exercise lol.

I’ve heard a lot of cities don’t want them. I guess there been a lot of accidents with pedestrians, cars, etc....

Lower scale communities seem to enjoy lime bikes, bird scooters etc, while upper scale communities detest them.

At least that's the vibe i've gotten here in San Diego. Communities such as Coronado, Del Mar and La Jolla are passing ordinances to ban them from their streets. While Central San Diego has them on damn near every corner and used regularly.

1. I've been using Airbnb/VRBO on my house in Denver since 2015 and now pays for all of my house expenses, including mortgage. I also use those services when I travel.

2. I prefer Lyft over Uber since it's typically cheaper, drivers are nicer, and they give me the occassional 50% off rides for two weeks like what I have now (used it last night to go to the plaza in KC).

3. I used Turo once and had a good experience with it. Some owners jack up different fees so it takes more examination than originally thought.

Types of those things are all over MPLS. Which confirms the Detox post.
Even when one company moved into MPLS-the council ACTUALLY DEMANDED they remove them because they did not have a license to do business in the city.

People are getting injured like crazy on the scooters. ER visits went way up after they were introduced. Small wheels hit large cracks.

https://minnlawyer.com/2018/06/13/pe...-their-sights/

One of the suburbs close by allowed lime bikes. Only during the summer months. It is a trial basis. I would like to know if they stop at the city border. Because if I would find that thing in my yard, it is going straight to the scrapper.

The last time I was out there those ****ing scooters were everywhere down by the Midway. Like a herd of weird people riding their chariots into battle.

An issue that's probably national, but is true here in Denver, is that the scooters are technically classified as toys. So most people don't think about wearing helmets, and even if they do they don't own one or they don't have it handy when they rent a scooter. Then they face plant into the pavement at 15 miles per hour, because those things can really move going downhill.

I'm actually kind of intrigued by them, and society might be better off if everyone used them instead of cars. But there are some bugs to work out.

Chief Pagan 02-09-2019 04:09 PM

I was in San Francisco shortly after the scooter craze hit. People were riding them on the sidewalks at 10+ mph weaving in and around pedestrians.

If the only way to prevent that is to prohibite scooters, I'm 100% for prohibiting scooters.

FlaChief58 02-09-2019 07:17 PM

They are huge in college towns. You can't walk 5 feet In Tempe near ASU and not see 40-50 at a clip. There are about 4-5 different companies. Some are really damn fast.

I also forgot about Grubhub, Postmates and Task Rabbit. I've not used any of those.

I live in the country and don't play well with others so this "sharing" crap is just that, crap. It's just another step towards socialism only instead of the government owning the scooters it's an intermediary. If you live in town go for it but don't try to push you sense of "do-gooder" on me. As a friend once said "you can borrow everything but my truck and my wife. Truck is old, wife is young and you might throw a rod in either one".

Some of these sharing services are individuals and others are companies. You pay for the services and no one is making you pay, unlike the government. :shake:

I think your analogy is way off.

Bugeater 02-11-2019 08:13 AM

tmax63 02-11-2019 08:14 AM

Not completely, it's helping do away with private ownership of transportation in cities.
